1. Tang Taizong- Military leader who founded the Tang Dynasty, reunited china,
and brought stable government back to china
2. bureaucracy- System of government with many departments and bureaus, all
headed by appointed officials.
3. Empress Wu- The only female in Chinese history who worked to raise the
position of women.
4. Chang’an- The thriving cultural and commercial capital of China during Tang
dynasty with population of about 2 million.
5. Song Dynasty- Family who ruled China after the Tang from 960-1279 A.D.
They focused on good government, the Chinese heartland, and southern China.
6. scholar officials- The class of highly educated civil servants who entered
government only after passing special examinations.
7. civil service examinations- Tough government held exams given to people who
wanted to bec0ome officials of the government.
8. merit system- The process of hiring and promoting people based on talent and
skills, rather than on wealth or social status.
9. urbanization- The growth of cities which usually results form economic growth.
10.Daoism: Chinese philosophy and religion that was based on the following of the
way of nature. Dao = “the way”
11. Buddhism: religion based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, teaches that
people should give up desire and seek enlightenment
12.Confucianism: teachings about ethics and morals by Confucius, Chinese
philosopher, who also taught about the respect of social order
13.Neo-Confucianism: new form of Confucianism, influenced by Buddhism and
Daoism, that stressed self-improvement and education
14.Emperor Wuzong: Daoist leader that led a violent persecution of Buddhists
