GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY Ross S. Berkowitz, MD, Director DIVISION MEMBERS Sarah Feldman, MD Colleen Feltmate, MD Donald P. Goldstein, MD Neil Horowitz, MD Robert C. Knapp, MD (Emeritus) Michael G. Muto, MD Alex Shu-Wing Ng, PhD Fellows Sutapa Ghosh, MD Nicole Nevadunsky, MD Noah Rodriguez, MD MISSION The mission of the Gynecologic Oncology Division is to excel in patient care and teaching and to advance the understanding and treatment of gynecologic neoplasia. We provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary evaluation, treatment and follow-up of patients with suspected or proven pre-invasive or invasive gynecologic malignancies; including ovarian, endometrial, cervical, vulvar, vaginal and trophoblastic cancers. ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN AY 2008-2009 The Division had several important accomplishments during the past academic year: Dr. Sarah Feldman computerized all clinical data for the Pap Smear Evaluation Center and this data base will be an invaluable resource to advance the understanding and care of Pap smear abnormalities. Drs. Colleen Feltmate and Michael Muto completed a study on the role of robotic surgery in endometrial cancer which was presented at the International Congress on Gynecologic Robotic Surgery. This study demonstrated that robotic surgery could significantly reduce operative morbidity in obese patients and the presentation won the award for the best scientific presentation at the meeting. Dr. Neil Horowitz is leading an innovative study of the use of a biologic agent in the therapy of recurrent or metastatic vulvar cancer and early results are very encouraging. Drs. Donald Goldstein and Ross Berkowitz were requested to write review articles on the current management of gestational trophoblastic disease by the New England Journal of Medicine and Gynecologic Oncology. Dr. Goldstein was also invited to be the keynote speaker at the XV World Congress of Gestational Trophoblastic Diseases in Cochin, India in 2009. We continue to expand our clinical relationships with affiliated hospitals and collaboration in research and education across the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center Gynecologic Cancer Program. GOALS FOR AY 2009-2010 Develop new clinical relationships with affiliated hospitals Strengthen research efforts in ovarian cancer, cervical neoplasia, endometrial cancer and gestational trophoblastic disease. Strengthen collaboration in research and education across Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center and actively participate in Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in ovarian cancer. Advance role of minimally invasive surgery in management of gynecologic malignancies. Expand educational outreach to community physicians.
