EAST ASIA: KOREA AND VIETNAM By: Jada, Julia, Sadiya and Kyriako AIM: What are the Similarities between Korea and Vietnam? DO NOW: - What do you already know about Korea and/or Vietnam? - What do you want to learn about either civilization? Korean Geography -located on the Korean Peninsula in North East Asia -land is very mountainous especially in the eastern region -only a third of the land is low-land in the western region - Most rivers flood in the west low lands, making it perfect to grow soybeans and rice - Amnok River in North - Nakdong River in the South The First Korean Kingdom: Joseon 2,333 BCE - 109 BCE - It was conquered by China’s Han Dynasty - Chinese culture started to now enter Korea The Three Kingdoms (57 BCE - 668 BCE) -three separate kingdoms ruled and they fought for dominance over the peninsula 1. Goguryeo: the first and largest 2. Baekje 3. Silla: in 668 BCE, it defeated the other two Chinese Influence during the Three Kingdoms - Adopted Buddhism as the main religion - Silla Kingdom allied with the Tang Dynasty and government, Buddhist monuments and art flourished - Modified the Chinese written characters to fit their own culture The Koryo took over the Silla Kingdom and ruled from 918 – 1393, but Chinese culture remained. Vietnam Geography - Rolling hills and tropical forests - Lowlands is perfect to grow rice and nuts - Characterized by two major river deltas: NORTH: Red River Delta SOUTH: Mekong River Delta VIETNAM TIMELINE • Kingdom of Champa - 2000 BC -first kingdom formed between the deltas • Viet Rulers - 2nd Century -South China’s Qin Dynasty members took over the Red River Delta • Han and Tang Chinese Dynasties conquered: 111BC-939CE • 939 CE - freedom from China led by a rebellion by Ngo Quyen GLOBAL EFFECTS Korea and Vietnam are thought of as extensions of China and Chinese rule So, these two countries underwent ISOLATIONISM - network of trading only with China, led to ignoring of the outside world a.k.a. Tributary Link SINIFICATION - term for the spread and absorption of Chinese culture SINIFICATION OF KOREA AND VIETNAM • What was the same as China: - built schools and universities to teach Confucianism built Buddhist temples, monasteries and statues civil service exams to bring smart people into government and military modified the Chinese writing characters pottery, literature and poetry farming and irrigation technology government and military organization SINIFICATION OF KOREA AND VIETNAM What was different from China Korea -civil service exams open only to aristocrats and elite military families - Korean pottery had blue-green color Vietnam - woman rebelled against Confucius social order that said that there should be a male authority figure in the house.
