Year 3/4 Spellings
We are now using a Spelling scheme called ‘Read, Write, Inc.’ for our spellings. This has been
introduced from Year 3 to Year 5.
The children work on their spellings in their classes, with daily spelling sessions of
approximately 10 minutes.
Units of work last for 2 weeks and follow an identical pattern of:
Information check – where the children practise spelling 88 Red words (common words with
unusual spellings) using techniques such as mnemonics, raps, words-in-words and ‘naughty’
letters. Homophones (words which sound the same but are spelt differently) are also
introduced in this lesson.
Dot dash and count Alternate spellings for the same sound are taught in single and multisyllable words.
Write the root – the impact of suffixes on key root words is taught.
Word fill – Practise spelling the homophones in the context of sentences.
Circle the right one – the correct spelling is selected form other incorrect spellings of the
same word.
Four-in-a-row game – Partner work, taking turns to assess each other’s knowledge of the
week’s words.
Dictation – partner work to assess spellings using dictations.
Spelling Log – the children identify the words they would like to review in subsequent weeks.
Individual spelling logs –these are regularly updated with the common words the children
find hard to spell. These words will be written in the homework diary to practise at home.
Spelling Challenge
During the last week of a half term there will be a spelling challenge where the children wok
in groups to learn their words from their spelling logs, helping one another to master these. A
list of between 30 and 50 words will be sent home for the children to practise with you. At
the end of the week (next to last school day of the week) there will be a Spelling Challenge
Day when the children will be tested on these words. They will then be able to share their
successes with you.
These are the focus sounds for the units we will be working on this term. Please support your
children in searching for extra words with these sounds and help them to find ways to
remember the spellings. As each child will have different spellings (personal to them), their
words to learn will be written in their homework diary. The list below is an overview of
sounds / spelling patterns being covered.
