What causes the electrical faults or voltage dips?
These electrical faults arise because the smoke and other matter from the fire
provide a conductive path, which in layman’s terms results in a “short circuit”.
Smoke containing carbon and ash from the bushfire rises and can cause electricity
to ‘arc’, or ‘jump’, from one line to another creating a power fluctuation.
The power fluctuation is detected by a sensor on the network, which sends a
message to a computer that automatically shuts down the line/s to prevent damage
and for safety reasons – this happens automatically and within milliseconds.
Voltage dips on electricity networks are not unusual and can be caused, particularly
on lower voltage networks, by various factors including wildlife and lightning.
