POSITION DESCRIPTION
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
SUPERVISION & MANAGEMENT







Manage/supervise designated staff and control the day to day functioning of the sonography
services of FRSL
Oversee duty roster for Sonographers ensuring adequate, fair and appropriate staffing at all
times.
Review protocols and processes in order to continually improve the provision of ultrasound
services
Promote the fostering of a team environment which enhances partnership and co-operation
Assist in the development of new policies and procedures within the Company and
demonstrate a commitment to continual improvement activities
Assist the Clinical Imaging Manager in senior level administrative tasks relating to
ultrasound
Work in conjunction with all Team Leaders
ENVIRONMENT


Maintain environment and facilities to ensure an effective, quality service provision which
prevents the spread of infection
Ensure patients are provided with a clean, tidy, safe and welcoming environment
EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES



Input into the selection and planning for sonography equipment and assets in consultation
with the Clinical Imaging Manager and Clinical Director
Manage sonography equipment malfunction and facilities issues in conjunction with the
Clinical Imaging Manager
Manage sonography medical consumable stocks throughout the Company, in accordance with
Company policy
STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING








Identify sonography staff training needs
Assist the Clinical Director with Clinical Quality Management Programme (CQMP) audits
Maintenance of CME and Accreditation records for sonography staff
Conduct Performance Reviews for Sonographers
Undertake additional courses and conferences to promote personal and professional
development in consultation with the Clinical Imaging Manager
Share knowledge and skills with others
Commits to developing teamwork within your designated staff group, and contributes fully
to promoting co-operation between teams within the company
Oversees and supports student training identifying areas of improvement and planning to
accommodate all training needs.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
 Accepts responsibility for ensuring that staff members comply with and understand the
significance and application of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and safe
operating procedures
 Commits to a continuous improvement in health and safety issues, by identifying and
recording and reporting of potential hazards, incidents and injuries, through the prescribed
channels.

Participates (and encourages staff participation) in regular audits prepared by the Health
and Safety Officer, and ensures staff are familiar with Fulford Radiology's health and safety
related protocols.
Actively manages any known hazards within the workplace, undertaking monitoring and
evaluation on a regular basis.
Participates in health and safety training, and involves staff in development,
implementation and review of safe work practices.
Is familiar with the general emergency procedures, and encourages staff to participate in
'test runs'
CLINICAL DUTIES
The Charge Sonographer will be expected to perform a wide range of Ultrasound procedures to
enable appropriate oversight to be provided to staff. However, it is recognised that the
incumbent may wish to develop their own particular specialty, and taking into account the skill set
existing within the division, this will be encouraged.
QUALITY








Perform requested examinations on patients, producing images of an excellent diagnostic
quality
Demonstrate technical and professional competence as a Sonographer, capable of teaching
and raising skill levels
Ensure procedures are conducted with a high standard of care, remains up-to-date with
emergency and other protocols
Gives due regard to patient privacy and demonstrates commitment to service
Ensures that the quality and production of images are in accordance with good professional
practice and relevant protocols
Participates actively in quality assurance and film review
Is proficient in the use of the Radiology Information System – COMRAD
Meets as required with the Clinical Director and/or Lead Radiologist Ultrasound to discuss or
seek guidance and direction pertaining to service quality or clinical issues
PATIENT CARE









Ensure the sonography team adhere to guidelines for the use of ultrasound equipment.
Ensure the sonography team offer patients information to assist them in understanding their
procedure; where appropriate ensuring informed consent is obtained
Ensure the sonography team provide post procedure instructions to patients and the escort
nurse as necessary
Undertake necessary recording of patient and procedure information, and ensure provision
of relevant information
Communicate with patients and staff in a friendly, clear, effective and helpful manner
Show awareness of the needs of people in times of stress and / or injury
Demonstrate cultural sensitivity
Maintain confidentiality and the right to privacy
Attend to needs of patient, taking responsibility for total service delivery
DECISION MAKING
The incumbent will have the delegated authority to make all necessary decisions about the
management of patients and clinical staff in this position's area of responsibility and
accountability. If further guidance is needed it is essential to consult with the Radiologist on
duty.

STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for co-ordinating and supervising the activities of all Sonographers.

To focus on continuous improvement in the delivery of ultrasound services to patients and to
referrers
To prioritise workloads and effectively manage operational activities across multiple sites for
both public and private sector patients
To bring innovation and foresight to the planning, development and implementation of new
initiatives
To maintain a current knowledge and understanding of best practice techniques in ultrasound
and to apply standards throughout the service.
To secure a sustainable ultrasound service by providing an ongoing programme of technical
staff training.
Maintain and encourage a multidisciplinary approach to the provision of the ultrasound service
by identifying and promoting the role of ultrasound in patient diagnosis and treatment.
To develop a co-operative spirit between all teams within the organisation, encouraging
mutual respect for the skill set of each team and their contribution towards the common goal.
To oversee and facilitate training of Sonographers (when training is required). This
will be achieved by positive outcomes and efficient scanning.

Qualified Sonographer, experienced at a level appropriate to the responsibility of the
appointment.

Excellent communicator - both written and oral
