A common letter string is a sequence of letters that occurs frequently.
Silent letters: ‘k’, ‘g’, ‘w’
A
Silent ‘k’ is always followed by ‘n’ and the ‘n’ is always followed by a vowel.
B
Silent ‘g’ is often followed by ‘n’ and the ‘n’ is often followed by a vowel.
C
Silent ‘w’ is often followed by ‘r’ and the ‘r’ is always followed by a vowel.

This unit builds on work from Year 2 term 2 and Year 3 term 2 on adding suffixes to words. Revise the terms
noun, adjective and verb. Ensure children understand the term suffix.
• Revise other known common suffixes: -y, -er, -est, -ly
• Explain that suffixes change the job of the word (e.g. changing nouns to adjectives).
