OVER THE COUNTER DRUGS (OTC) 1 WHAT ARE THEY? Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are medications that can be purchased at your local pharmacy, grocery, or convenience store without a prescription. 2 STREET NAMES Candy CCC or Triple C (Coricidin HBP Cough and Cold) Dex DM Drex DXM Orange Crush Poor Man’s PCP Red Devils Robo (Robitussin) Rojo Skittles Syrup Tussin Velvet Vitamin D 3 DXM Dextromethorphan (DXM), is a synthetic drug that is chemically similar to morphine. 4 POPULARITY Over-the-counter drugs, especially cough and cold medications are becoming very popular as recreational drugs for young teenagers between the ages of 12 to 16. 5 AVAILABILITY The internet has also become a popular place for teens to purchase powdered form of pure DXM. Liquid and tablets containing DXM are very easily accessed through local pharmacies and grocery stores. Although many stores make attempts to monitor and deter accessibility 6 THE HIGH Large doses of DXM can produce feeling of euphoria and hallucinations . The effects of a DXM high can last up to 6 hrs. 7 “ROBO SHAKE” “Robo Shake” is when the user drink a large amount of cough syrup containing DXM and then force themselves to vomit as to absorb enough DXM through the stomach lining . 8 SHORT AND LONG TERM SIDE EFFECTS 9 ADDICTION Due to some of the negative side effects some first time users may not abuse DXM. 10 OTHER ABUSED OTC 11 DIET PILLS Some teenagers use excessive amounts of diet pills in an attempt to lose weight quickly, others take them to get high. 12 WHAT MAKES DIET PILLS DANGEROUS? Ephedrine Caffeine Phenylpropranolamine 13 ADDICTION It is all too common for individuals to start off taking just a few diet pills and then, before they know it, graduate to full addiction, and dependence, on them. 14 SIDE EFFECTS AND COMPICLATIONS Cardiac Arrest Cardiac Arrhythmias Congestive heart failure Heart palpitations Stroke Seizures Headaches High blood pressure Dizziness Diarrhea 15 MOTION SICKNESS MEDICATIONS Motion sickness pills such as Dramamine are being used by teens; taken in large doses (one entire package or more), Dramamine can cause hallucinations. 16 SLEEPING AIDS Sleep aids such as Tylenol PM, Excedrin PM, and Sominex can cause extreme drowsiness when abused. 17
