China Propaganda Project
Congratulations! You have been selected by the Communist Party to use your analytical and artistic
talents to create a piece of Propaganda for amazing and wonderful China! Propaganda becomes the
basis for the mobilization of the people in the physical revolution, Great Leap Forward, Cultural
Revolution, and for the Four Modernizations under Deng Xiaoping. DUE: MON April 18, 2016
Objectives: This project is intended to have students demonstrate knowledge of policies, leaders, and
national effects thereof through propaganda analysis.
Directions: 1. Students will begin by finding essential information for one of the topics listed below.
2. After finding information about that topic, students will research and analyze propaganda about that
topic. Students will have to provide the piece of propaganda and their analysis on a separate sheet of
paper according to the criteria listed below.
3. Finally students will construct their own piece of propaganda to illustrate one of the policies and
movements in China during this time period. Students are expected to provide analysis of the piece they
made as well
Student created propaganda can be about any of the following:
Celebration of Mao Ze Dong
The Agricultural Great Leap Forward
The Red Guard
Steel in the Great Leap Forward
Communist v. Nationalist Civil War
Mao’s Red Book
The Long March
National People’s Congress
Celebration of Deng Xiaoping
Any of the 4 Modernizations under Deng Xiaoping
Cultural Revolution
Women’s roles in Communist China
Suggested Steps: 1. Research your example piece of Propaganda. Use your notes, textbook, Tools of
Propaganda sheet and online sources to analyze this piece. (Cite where your propoganda came from)
2. Write your analysis of that Propaganda piece be sure to link the piece to factual historical events,
people, policies, and places if possible.
3. Create your own propaganda piece and be sure to include your own analysis of your work.
Your poster should include the following:
1. Image (no computer images) Color
2. Slogan (catchy phrase) ex. “Apple” Think Different, “President Obama”: “Change We Can Believe In”
3. Clear point of view
4. Clear main idea
5. Good use of the Propaganda tools.

Example Poster and Analysis.
Essential Knowledge: (**This is the identification I had you do for homework**)

Poster advocating the Cultural Revolution which occurred under Mao Ze Dong’s leadership
between the years of 1966 and 1976.
One of the major factions of the Cultural Revolutions was the Red Guard. The Red Guard was
made up of mostly educated youth who primarily teenagers and young adults. These students
were fiercely loyal to Mao Ze Dong
The Cultural Revolution begins as a way for Mao to consolidate his power and to keep his ideals
of a Communist revolution going after the failure of the Great Leap Forward.
The cultural revolution led to mass destruction and chaos as it grew out of hand
Ended by forcing the Red guard to move to the countryside away from the cities to learn how to
work.
Analysis:

(Subject/Event)This is from the perspective of a youth in the Red Guard
(Objective) The objective of this poster is rally youth to join the Red Guard, support Mao, and
join the new Cultural Revolution.
(Major Symbols) It uses an idealized character of a young confident youth to demonstrate the
power of the younger generation in ushering in a new age of communist reform in China.
(Propaganda Technique) The repetition of the flags, red books, and armbands demonstrates the
zeal of the Red Guard and unwavering loyalty to Chairman Mao.
(Caption/Slogan) The slogan “Criticize the old world and build a new world with Mao Ze Dong
thought as a weapon” signifies the militant radical ideology of the Red Guard during the time.
