The department is currently staffed by 8 full-time consultants, each with
complimentary areas of sub-specialisation. Three consultants from South
Warwickshire General Hospital also take part in the emergency on-call rota.

Ophthalmology Facilities
The ophthalmology department is a purpose built ophthalmic unit in the University
Hospital which provides integrated ophthalmology services for the whole of Coventry
& Warwickshire.
The Unit has a spacious outpatient department, with up to date facilities, including
YAG and Argon lasers. The camera room has a Zeiss digital imaging system, with a
Nikon photo slit-lamp and a 3-chip fundus camera. Images can be relayed to
workstations in all the consulting rooms in the retina suite and to the principle
consulting rooms in the general outpatient area. The retina suite also has Ocular
coherence topography and a scanning laser ophthalmoscope. The cornea room is
equipped with topography and pachymetry equipment. The glaucoma department also

has three Humphrey and two Goldmann perimeters and Heidelberg retinal
topography.
Each consulting room is equipped with a slit-lamp and indirect ophthalmoscope. A
real-time slit-lamp video camera system is installed for teaching purposes in the
principle consulting room in the general ophthalmology area and in casualty.
There is a large orthoptic department, which provides orthoptic services for three
hospital sites (Coventry, Nuneaton and Rugby). Undergraduate orthoptic students
regularly attend the unit. This department is also responsible for the perimetry,
biometry and photography/angiography services. The department has its own
dedicated ophthalmic imaging department with two full time medical photographers.
Electrodiagnostic services are available through the department of neurophysiology at
University Hospital.
The optometry department provides a full-time refraction and dispensing service to
support all outpatient medical activity. This department also provides a
comprehensive service in contact lens fitting and low vision assessment and postoperative cataract management. Members of this department also run pre-operative
and post-op cataract clinics and assist in casualty.
There is a dedicated cataract suite within the unit for pre-op and post-operative
cataract assessment. This is run principally by optometrists and nursing staff. There
is also a nurse run lid clinic and stable glaucoma service. The head and neck ward has
14 ophthalmic in-patient beds with 4 side rooms, 14 morning and afternoon day case
beds and two examination rooms.
The two dedicated ophthalmic theatres have ceiling mounted Leica microscopes, with
video camera attachments. We also have additional use of a fully equipped third
theatre with a Leica microscope and video capturing DVD player. There is also an
indirect video camera for teaching purposes. Day case cataract surgery also takes
place at the Hospital of St Cross.
Rugby and George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton. A third part-time theatre on the
Coventry and Warwickshire site is also equipped with floor standing Leica
microscope.
RELATIONSHIPS
Each officer is responsible to the consultants.
GENERAL DUTIES
Responsibilities include general, special clinic and casualty duties, as directed on the
timetable.

Ward duties include attending ward rounds and examination of pre-and postoperative
patients. Further ward duties may be required as necessary, when any of the SHO's
are on leave to provide continued continuity of care. Most patients are assessed in
preoperative assessment clinics prior to admission.
The post holder will be accountable for improving and complying with infection
control practices.
On Call Commitment
Basic 40 hour week, on call ADH to be confirmed.
SHOs participate in the first on-call rota with the junior fellow. The rota is 1:8 with
prospective cover. The post is non resident on call and the working pattern is defined
as "on call rota".
When on weekend call, the SHO on duty will attend the ophthalmic unit each
morning to participate in the ward round and attend any eye casualties.
Emergency Duties
Reception, diagnosis, treatment and completion of case records of patients referred as
emergencies to the department, including admission where necessary. Liaison with
senior medical staff, either specialist registrars, non-consultant career grade doctors or
consultants regarding all cases requiring admission or general anaesthesia. Assistance
of senior medical staff with emergency surgery. Provide cover for colleagues on
leave as indicated in the duty rota. It may be necessary to attend other hospitals in
order to see patients on an emergency basis.
Retrieval of donor corneas is routinely undertaken by the theatre and nursing staff.
The SHO may be required to attend other hospitals or the home of a deceased person
to supervise the retrieval, if the nurse is still undergoing training.
The doctor accepts that he/she will perform duties in occasional emergencies and
unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation
where practicable with his/her colleagues, both senior and junior. As stressed by this
Secretary of State, it has been agreed that they will perform such duties with the
understanding that additional commitments arising under this subsection are
exceptional. In particular juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind
for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
TRAINING AND RESEARCH
This post is not recognised by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for
postgraduate training but there is ample opportunity for training and research.
All junior medical staff are expected to attend the monthly grand round. They are
expected to participate in the teaching programme and contribute to the discussions.

If the successful candidate is already post fellowship he/she will be expected to take a
lead role in some tutorial sessions.
There is an excellent library at Clinical Sciences Building on the University Hospital
which has many ophthalmology books and journals and is staffed by four full-time
librarians. CD-ROM and Internet search services are also available on request.
The successful candidate is expected to develop a research interest and undertake
research projects under senior supervision. There is an active research and
development committee within the Trust and on-site co-operation with the department
of statistics at Warwick University.

University Hospital Coventry, St Cross Hospital Rugby, George Eliot Hospital
Nuneaton.
MAIN CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The post is covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital and Dental
(England and Wales) as amended from time to time.
Whole time appointment for a period of 12 months.
The salary scale is that appropriate for the grade of post, as laid down by the Terms
and Conditions of Service.

the provisions of Section 4(2) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders act 1974
(Exceptions) Order 1995. Applicants are therefore not entitled to withhold
