Temple Beth Am Kashrut Policy
This policy is subject to change by Ritual Committee and/or Rabbi. Please refer to revision date.
All food brought into the Temple Beth Am building must be either
 in an unopened package, marked with a valid kosher symbol
(a plain K is not acceptable, nor is the “Tablet-K” (shaped like 10 commandments))
 brought from a supervised kosher establishment
 (Geulah's, Brownstein's, Malek's, Lipman's, Chabad Kitchen, Jewish Home Cafeteria/Leo's
Deli, Pittsford Plaza Coldstone Creamery, Kosher-2-Go, Balsam Bagel are only local ones)
 brought by an approved kosher caterer (Must specify supervised-kosher preparation)
 fresh fruits and vegetables (vegetables, particularly leafy and /or “organic” ones, must be
cleaned carefully for insect removal)
 (uncooked) eggs, unopened milk, whole fish (with fins and scales)
No food may be prepared in a person's home, regardless of his/her kashrut observance and
brought into Temple Beth Am.
No utensils, dishes, containers, or appliances may be brought from a person's home, regardless
of their kashrut observance (The Ritual Committee may be consulted about the possibility of
kashering such items)
All food preparation in the Temple must be done under the supervision of an Approved Kitchen
User (as designated by the Temple board and/or Ritual Committee)
No food or other item may be brought into the building from one hour before sunset on Friday to
one hour after sunset on Saturday. (Permitted on weekday holidays, except Yom Kippur)
No food or drink may be heated or cooked on Shabbat, except as discussed and approved by an
Approved Shabbat Authority (as designated by the Temple board and/or Ritual Committee)
Non-perishable items may be stored in cabinets, but the meat counters may not be used to store
dairy items and vice-versa. Pareve foods may be stored anywhere, but should be clearly marked
as pareve.
Frozen items must be placed on the marked shelf (dairy, meat, pareve) and marked clearly as to
their status and date frozen. (nothing to be written on Shabbat)
Refrigerated items MUST be marked as to their status and date refrigerated (nothing to be written
on Shabbat)
If any mistake is made with dairy/meat/pareve or foods not marked kosher, it must be reported to
the Ritual Committee so kashrut of utensils can be reestablished.
The center island can be used for EITHER meat or dairy (but not at same time), but must be
throughly cleaned with soap before and after use. No hot item may be placed directly on center
island without a trivet or cloth.
Ovens/dishwasher may be used for meat or dairy, but not at same time
