Tropical North Queensland Located at the top end of Queensland in Australia, Tropical North Queensland is all that its name portrays and much more. As the only place in the world where two World Heritage Listed natural phenomenons exist side by side and where the rainforest meets the reef, the destination provides an abundance of natural attractions and spectacles. Location Tropical North Queensland is Australia’s natural wonderland. A tropical paradise wedged between the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef and the Australian Outback, the region is home to World Heritage listed rainforests, an abundance of unique flora and fauna and some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Palm-fringed beaches, rainforest-clad mountains and crystal clear streams and rivers combine to make Tropical North Queensland the destination of choice for millions of visitors every year. The capital of the region is Cairns, one of Australia’s fastest-growing regional centres. Living Here Cairns has all the facilities of a major city, including an airport, shopping centres and entertainment venues. The area is in the middle of a major development boom, which is only increasing its attractiveness. You can’t help but enjoy the amazing beaches in Tropical North Queensland, however caution is needed while swimming in the beaches from October to May, when Box Jellyfish are found in the coastal waters. Care must be taken during this time to only swim in netted areas. Freshwater crocodiles are also found in inland rivers, billabongs and swamps, and care is necessary when swimming in any of these. Transport Public bus services operate in most areas, and taxis are also available. Cars are the most popular mode of transport. Climate Due to its location midway between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Equator, Tropical North Queensland experiences two distinct seasons, summer and winter. The summer season, also known as the wet season, generally occurs between November and April. With high rainfall levels and warmer weather during this season, the destination experiences high humidity levels, attracting less tourists to the area. The winter season or ‘dry season’ experiences low rainfall and mild temperatures. The season typically begins in May and ends in mid - late October, with cooler temperatures and less rain. Cairns’ average annual temperature ranges from a maximum of 31.4C to a minimum of 17.0C, meaning summer clothing is worn year round. Tropical North Queensland Peak Seasons Peak season is from May-November, during the dry season.
