Holt World History – Ancient World
History Alive! – Ancient World
History Alive! – Medieval World and Beyond
* All History Alive! And Holt texts stay in the classroom. If a student needs to take a text
out of the classroom, they can be signed out by the student. The World texts have been
checked out to each student for the duration of the school year.
Unit 1 – Greece – 7.5 weeks
Mythology, geography, the alphabet, city-states, Athens and Sparta, origins of
democracy, golden age of art, Alexander the Great, philosophy and drama,
athletics and Olympics, and Hellenistic culture.
Unit 2 – Rome – 7.5 weeks
Early influences, societal hierarchy, Roman Republic, Roman Empire, expansion,
daily life, roman army, engineering feats, sports, and the rise of Christianity.
Unit 3 – Byzantine and Islamic Empires – 2 weeks
Constantinople greatness, Justinian Code, Christianity schism, rise of Islam,
Muslim scientific and cultural achievements, and the Silk Road.
Unit 4 – West Africa – 3 weeks
The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhay, salt trade, trade of Sahara, spread of
Islam, and Mansa Musa.
Unit 5 – Medieval Europe –5 weeks
Barbarians, Charlemagne, Feudalism, manor system, Domesday book, Magna
Carta, chivalry and knights, role of the Church, the plague, and architecture.
Unit 6 – Crusades – 1 week
Technology, effects on European society, and cultural diffusion.
Unit 7 – Mesoamerica – 3 weeks
Aztecs, Incas, Mayans, Popul Voh, Animism, and Spanish invasion.
Unit 8 – Explorers and Reformation – 4 weeks
European Exploration, Reformation, Renaissance, mercantilism, colonization,
and the slave trade.
7th Grade World History Expectations and Guidelines
Welcome to the Ancient World! This year we are going to explore the cultures of the ancient
world and connect them to our everyday life. Everyone in the U.S. is affected by the cultures of
the past – from Greek architecture and Roman language to the exploration of the Americas.
Every person has a right and a guarantee to an education. In order for your child to get the most
out of their education, they should follow these expectations and guidelines:
Class Expectations
 Come to class ready to be a positive participant in our learning community
 Always test your intellectual limits – it will make you and your peers stronger learners!
 Take responsibility and hold yourself accountable for everything you do, be it good or
bad.
 Finish your work completely and on time. This will help you stay with the rest of the class
and understand the material more fully.
 Have fun learning! Our classroom is designed so that each student can feel comfortable
with and enjoy becoming lifelong learners.
Class Guidelines
 Be Prepared for Class Every Day
o This includes having all of your daily materials and any assignments due with you
when you get to class, as well as being in the classroom and ready to begin
when the bell rings.
 Maintain Civility With All Persons in the Classroom
o Civility is simply defined as politeness and courtesy. This includes not only letting
one person speak at a time, but also refraining from any sort of harassment or
bullying. Issues of harassment or bullying will be dealt with quickly and strictly.
 Focus on the Task at Hand
o If you are focused on your learning, you will get the most out of the classroom.
Do not work on other homework, but focus on what we are learning in our Social
Studies classroom.
 Respect Other People’s Space and Belongings
o Each person has a right to their own space and their own property. Leave other
peoples’ belongings alone, and make sure that you are not hovering over other
people. If everyone in the class respects these boundaries, each person will be
able to focus on their own work and learn with less distraction.
Discipline
Most discipline issues are resolved in the classroom via reflective writings and use of the class
point bank. If there is a serious issue, Genoa’s leveling system will be used.
Assessment/Grading
Students are assessed in a variety of different ways, including homework, class assignments,
tests and quizzes, and performance assessments. Homework is a noticeable part of our class,
and is posted daily on the board for students to copy down in their school logs. Students can
access their grades via PowerSchool or in the classroom. Grades are updated every Monday.
