KS2: Understand computer networks
Today we are learning about:
Computer networks
● I can name devices on a computer
network
● I can explain the purpose of certain
devices on a computer network

What devices can you
discover?
Server
This computer provides services to (it serves) a computer
network. Services include letting people log in to the
network, running programs for you, letting you save to a
shared area, and letting you print and access the internet.
We don’t use this computer on a daily basis.
Clients
We use these computers to access the services on a
computer network. For example, to use programming
software, such as Scratch or Kodu, or word processing
software. Most of the time we have to log in to the
network on these computers before we can use them.
Switch
This is used to join different devices on the network
together so they can ‘talk’ to each other by exchanging
data. The data travels along the cables which come out of
this device.
Wifi point
This lets wireless devices (laptops or tablets
for example) connect to the network. It works
by passing data through the air using
something called radio waves.
BT Green Cabinet
This contains multiple switches and provides a junction
between all local homes, schools business etc and the
local telephone exchange so they can access the internet.
Printer
This is used to print out documents from the
computers on the network.
