From Bonn to the World:
Ludwig van Beethoven
Traces of Bonn’s journey through the centuries, from
Roman garrison to medieval and early modern settlement around the Minster Basilica, to electoral residence and royal university town, all the way to the
seat of government for the first stable democracy on
German soil and Germany’s United Nations city can
be found throughout the city.
Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth house in Bonn attracts
almost 100,000 visitors from all overthe world every
year. The famous composer was born in the garden
wing of the house at Bonngasse 20 in December 1770.
Today the house accommodates a collection of over 150
memorabilia associated with the composer, including
instruments, personal objects, original manuscripts,
correspondence, portraits and much more, offering not
only the most extensive Beethoven collection worldwide,
but also a vivid insight into the composer’s life and work.
The cosmopolitan atmosphere of “Rhenish way of life
and culture” makes people from all corners of the
globe feel at home.
The “Path of Democracy" allows visitors to experience
contemporary German history after 1945 first hand.

centre is currently working on a new complete edition of
the works of Beethoven.
The Digital Beethoven House in the neighbouring building
takes visitors on a virtual voyage of discovery through
the world of Beethoven; and the modern Chamber Music
Hall, also situated right next to the museum, allows
visitors to round off their visit with a concert.

Every year in September the four-week festival brings

Rhenish cheer that creates the unmistakable atmosphere
of the festival in the city on the Rhine. Some seventy

orchestras, outstanding ensembles, distinguished
soloists and promising young artists take place during
the enchanting period between the sunny days of late
summer and the golden days of autumn.

András Schiff, Paavo Järvi, Gustavo Dudamel, Daniel
Hope and Martin Grubinger. These and many other

Beethoven Orchestra Bonn –
A Worthy Concert Hall
for Beethoven
We play for you
„Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy.“ The diary of Ludwig van Beethoven
Why not attend a musical highlight as the grand finale to
an exciting day in Bonn? The Beethoven Orchestra Bonn
has been performing classical music inspired by the spirit
of Ludwig van Beethoven at the very highest level for over
a century and invites you to attend one of its concerts in
Bonn, the city of Beethoven.
The programme of the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn,
conducted by General Music Director Stefan Blunier and
accompanied by distinguished soloists and world-famous
stars, ranges across the entire repertoire of classical
music.
The performances by the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn
range from symphony concerts and the accompaniment
of international competitions all the way to chamber
music concerts and opera performances. The Orchestra’s
broad opera repertoire includes over 110 performances at
the Bonn Opera House every year.
The success of the conductor with the Beethoven
Orchestra Bonn has also awakened interest for music
from Bonn beyond the city’s walls, with the Orchestra
also earning a first-class reputation in the international
music industry. General Music Director Stefan Blunier’s
merits include a total of four ECHO Classic awards and a
nomination for the international ICMA award.
The Fest.Spiel.Haus.Freunde, the Bürger für Beethoven,
the Festspielhaus Förderverein and an initiative led by
Chamber of Industry and Commerce President Wolfgang
Grießl have all joined forces to realize the project.
Friends of Beethoven all over the world should unite to
erect a concert hall for this musical genius that is worthy
of his greatness.
The press has written about the Beethoven Orchestra
Bonn: “Regardless of whether Puccini, Korngold or Franz
Schreker, a world-class orchestra has been born. An
evening of music […] is increasingly becoming nothing
short of the standard that one has grown accustomed to
at international festivals.”
The group, “Grießl and friends” intends to recruit 5,000
entrepreneurs, who will each contribute EUR 1,000
($ 1,500) to the building of the concert hall during the
next five years. Galas, benefit concerts and other events
will all raise money to ensure the funding and success
of the project. All donations, including smaller donations,
are welcome.
As the ambassadors of Ludwig
van Beethoven, the Beethoven
Orchestra Bonn performs
passionate and touching music
for people all over the world.

The music of Ludwig van Beethoven is cherished
throughout the entire world. “The music of Beethoven
belongs not only to the Germans, but to all of mankind
and the whole world. The thunderous torrent of his music
resembles the Yangtze River.”
(China Reconstructs, no. 1).
Zaha Hadid: "Diamond"
Beethoven in Bonn
Dear Friends of Beethoven
The envisaged new concert hall will emerge on the edge
of the Rheinaue, Bonn’s largest park and the foot of the
Post Towers, the corporate headquarters of Deutsche Post
DHL, and should be ready in 2020 in time for Beethoven’s
250th birthday.
Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn in December
1770 and remained faithful to his hometown even
after moving to Vienna. He wrote of his years in Bonn,
“I will always remember my time in Bonn as one of the
happiest periods of my life.”
Bonn was blessed to be the birth place of Ludwig van
Beethoven. The composer was born in a little house
on Bonngasse in 1770. It was here on the Rhine that
he took his first steps in music and here that his
genius became known before he would go forth into
the world.
A solitaire with countless facets, edges and curves: The
design by the architect Zaha Hadid brings to mind a
“diamond”. The perforated façade shines splendidly during
the day in many different directions and at night
the “diamond” sparkles mysteriously from the inside, just
as the music of Beethoven sets the world alight.
Beethoven is very special and dear to Bonn, and the
composer is ever-present in the city. His memory is
honoured with the Bonn Orchestra that bears his
name, the annual international Beethovenfest and
the Deutsche Telekom sponsored Beethoven Piano
Competition; not to mention various Beethoven
monuments, Beethoven chocolates and a Beethoven
wine.
The architects Hermann & Valentiny have formed their idea
for the concert hall as a moving sculpture: “The Waves”
with their magnificent, open verve are a reference to the
nearby Rhine and the movement in Beethoven’s music.
We call on all friends of Beethoven around the
world to support this project for a new concert hall.

Hermann & Valentiny: "Die Wellen"
There is a long-standing tradition of citizens in Bonn
honouring the memory of Ludwig van Beethoven.
The association to preserve the house that the worldfamous composer was born in was founded in as early
as 1889 by citizens of the city. The Beethoven Hall,
which was inaugurated in 1959, was also built with
donations from the city’s citizens.
The City of Bonn therefore considers itself the
epicentre when it comes to preserving his national
and international heritage, and now intends to honour
its most famous son with a new concert hall. Friends
of Beethoven in Bonn and all over world intend to fund
the building of a new world class concert hall with
their donations, with Deutsche Post DHL, who have
donated a figure in the double-digit millions, at the
forefront.
You too can contribute to the building of a great
concert hall that is worthy of the great composer.
