SHIBERHUR Theater Company
ShiberHur –
[Shib-ër Hûhr] `an inch of freedom´
Shiber (an Ottoman measuring unit equal to an open palm)
and Hur (Arabic for ´free´)
ShiberHur is a new independent Palestinian theatre company based In
Haifa and dedicated to producing the very best of contemporary and classical
theatre for audiences across Palestine and abroad.
In late 2009 a group of leading theatre practitioners, led by Amir Nizar Zuabi,
founded ShiberHur to create a truly independent space where we will be able to
create high standard theatre.
In less then 3 years since we have started we have created five new shows
That toured in Palestine (in the West bank and the Galilee)
Sneeze and other shorts preformed in Ramallah Haifa Jenin and Nazareth
And the hilarious one-man show Gone with great sorrow entertained audiences
all over Palestine
We were also invited to tour our shows internationally to great critical acclaim
In 2010 I am Yusuf and this is my brother was a co-production with the prestigious
Young Vic theater in London and enjoyed a six week run at the Young Vic
In 2011 we coproduced In the penal colony with Chur Theater in Switzerland
and later were invited to preform a 4week run in Young Vic London and were
chosen as critics choice by Timeout London
In 2012 we preformed a six week run of The Beloved at the Bush theater London
as part of the world stages London festival in the run up to the Olympics
Our aim is to establish a new theatre company with the ability to talk to the
world about what it means to be Palestinian in the 21st century.
We are still a new company and we are still building
but already we have discovered that we have Something to say that people in
Palestine and in other parts of the world want to hear.
I am Yusuf and this is my brother
By Amir Nizar Zuabi
Co-produced ShiberHur/Young Vic London
Primer 24 November 2009 Haifa
Set in a small Palestinian village, this is a delicate and poetic exploration
of the different forms love can take.
Handsome and courageous Ali has a burning passion for the dark-eyed
Nada. Yusuf, Ali’s disabled brother ,is fiercely loyal to his loved ones.
Rufus, a member of the occupying British forces, longs for Sheffield’s
cold fogs
while the villagers mourn for the destruction of the land they’ve lived
and worked for generations.
Amidst the violence and confusion of the 1948 war, can brotherly love survive?
And will the enduring love for one’s homeland, shared traditions and history
prevail even in the darkest hours or cause greater ructions?

Sneeze and other shorts
By Anton Chekov
A ShiberHur production
Primer April 2010 Haifa
What happens when you hate?
What happens when you love?
What happens if you sneeze?
A triple bill of shorts by the Great Russian master Anton Chekov
These short plays are renowned for their sharp wit and profound observations into
the nature of man.
The bear tells the story of a widow that has devoted her life for melancholy and her
meeting with a misogynistic land owner that has come to collect an old debt -they
hate each other so much from first sight that it is bound to end up as a great love
The weeding proposal is the story of a young couple that really love each other
But they just cant resist a small argument about a trivial matter this leads to an on
going disaster and an insight to there marital life to come
The sneeze tells the story of a petty clerk that sneezes on an eminent General
He insists on apologizing but is not sure that is enough -He is so anxious about the
consequence of the sneeze he dies.
Elegant and very funny… three shows in one night perfect night out
Kl al Arab
Although the plays are kept as they were written they feel very Palestinian
And very funny
Fasl al maqal
Chekov is physical and very funny in this smart and beautiful production
Terrific cast
Al medina
In the Penal colony
By Franz Kafka
Co produced ShiberHur /Theater Chur Switzerland
Primer 21 may 2011 Haifa
Kafka’s unforgettable classic retold
Far away in a remote prison camp, in an unnamed land
a man unaware of his crime is about to be strapped
into an elaborate execution device.
This device slowly and agonizingly inscribes the sentence on his
body, killing him over the course of 12 hours.
He does not know what he is charged with but will have mystical revelation
as he reaches his finial moments.
A camp officer explains to an eminent visitor the workings of both
the machine and of the camp’s internal judicial process.
The Executioner shows no mercy but will The Visitor intervene?

GONE-With Great Sorrow
By Amer Hlehel
A ShiberHur Production
Primer on 20 January 2011 Nazareth
A memorial service is held in honor of a dead leader by his personal assistant.
The guests have arrived the speakers are invited to read their obituaries But
instead of a moving grand finale we are all left with a biter taste Of a constant
near miss.
The embittered personal assistant uses this gathering to settle old scores and
petty rivalries with every one -His friends, his family and even his ex fiancé
No one is speared…Not even him self.
A deeply funny contemplation into all that is pathetic and ridiculous in the
political dealings and love affairs of Palestine.
Al medina
This show spears no one …hilarious…not polite and sad
Fasel al maqal
ShiberHur are really free
this show will annoy a lot of people but only because it shows their real
face.

The Beloved
By Amir Nizar Zuabi
Premiered on 21 June 2012 in the Bush Theater London
Commissioned as part of world stages London
When Abraham returns home from a journey with his son, his wife is troubled by
the boy’s state of mind.
What took place on the mountain that day is the beginning of a lifetime of
suffering for his son and the dawn of a new age for millions.
This is a hunting modern re-interpretation of the story of Abraham's willingness to
sacrifice his son on God’s command.
This meth is the meeting place of three great world religions - Islam, Judaism and
Christianity –and has been the subject of literature, art and philosophy throughout
the ages.
The Beloved reminds us that this historic tale began with just one family.
