MOHAWK VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE UTICA/ROME, NEW YORK Course Outline TH 193 Introduction to the Theater C-3, Cr-3 Catalog Description: This course introduces the foundations of theater art. Emphasis is placed on the theatrical production process. Topics include theater spaces, directing, acting, scenic design and professional work opportunities. Theater experiences from the Greek festival theater to the present are discussed. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of the course the student will: Demonstrate understanding of the differences between drama and theater Explain the varied processes involved in the creation of a production Recognize the varieties of theater experience in an historical context See and critique a theater production outside of class Recognize the components of a standard playhouse, including the various parts of the stage and their relation to blocking Experience the steps necessary to transfer the written words of a script into actual performance Recognize current trends in theater Major Topics Elements of theatre The Script Theatre spaces Directing The actor Scenic design Costume/makeup Lighting and sound Greek theatre Elizabethan theatre Contemporary theatre: Broadway and the West End Work opportunities in the theatre May 2013
