Maximize Battery Life of 3G Mobile Phones Learning Goal • Upon the completion of the lesson, students have the ability to address issues related to maximizing battery life of 3G cell phones Assumed Learning • State the function of a battery • Describe the construction of a single cell battery • List types of cell phones batteries • Compare characteristics of cell phone batteries • List types of batteries used in 3G cell phones Objectives • Describe the design constraints of cell phone batteries • Identify factors affecting battery consumption • Measure voltage and current when the cell phone is being used for different modes and functions • Explain methods to increase battery life Describe the design constraints of cell phone batteries • Old mobiles - new mobiles - future mobiles • Size, Weight, Heat, Cost, Environmental issues, Charging • Delivered using PowerPoint with pictures of new and old phones and future developments Identify factors affecting battery consumption • Q&A session – What are the functions of the mobile? – Which functions consume more power? • Students write answers on the board • Students are put in groups of 4 and use ideas from the board to prioritize power consumption into top 5 Measure voltage and current when the cell phone is being used for different modes and functions • Groups of 4 students will use their own mobile phones with power adapters and volt and current meters to measure the voltage and current of the 5 functions that they selected as the most power consuming • Use excel to chart the results of the measurements to confirm their hypothesis Explain methods to increase battery life • Write an overview report of at least 1,000 words concisely describing issues faced in maximizing battery life of 3G mobile phones. Justification • Seven principals for good teaching practices in undergraduate education (Chickering and Gamson) • Andragogy vs. pedagogy • Bloom’s Taxonomy • Scientific Method • Competition and cooperation Preparation • The week before this lesson, the teacher write down mobile make and model to give the technician to prepare the battery adaptor • Prepare 4 voltmeters and 4 ammeters • Instruct students to bring mobile phones with fully charged batteries Supporting Materials • Sukhbir Singh(n.d.).
