Amendments to
Special Provision 188
188
Cells and batteries offered for transport are not subject to other
provisions of these Regulations if they meet the requirements in
paragraphs (a) through (__) following:
(a) For a lithium metal or lithium alloy cell (including single cell
batteries), the lithium content is not more than 1 g.
(b) For a lithium ion cell (including single cell batteries), the
Watt-hour rating is not more than 20 Wh.
(c) For a lithium metal or lithium alloy battery the aggregate
lithium content is not more than 2 g.
(d) For a lithium ion battery, the Watt-hour rating is not more
than 100 Wh.
Note: Lithium ion battery may be comprised of cells exceeding 20
Wh provided Watt-hour rating of battery does not exceed
100 Wh.

Batteries as Integral
Part of Equipment
1. Equipment Containing Integral Batteries
Battery never intended to be removed or
replaced during product’s useable life.
2. Battery only transported when installed
in equipment
3. Equipment incorporates safety devices
7
Batteries Integral to Equipment
Proposed August 2015
• 38.3.2.1 A cell or battery that is an integral part of the
equipment it is intended to power that is transported
only when installed in the equipment, may be tested in
accordance with the applicable tests when installed in
the equipment.
March 2016
• 38.3.2.1 Equipment with an integral cell or battery and
fitted with protective devices necessary for use may be
used during the applicable test procedures when the
cell or battery is designed to be transported only when
installed in the equipment.
8
Lithium Metal Button Cells
Button cell or battery means a round small cell or battery when
the overall height is less than the diameter.
