If the idea of professional colon cleansing is a little too hard to digest, think about this… The bowel (aka the

drugs. The filtered temperature regulated water is introduced into the bowel via a sterilised disposable speculum.
This softens and loosens faeces resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis down thru disposable waste
tubing that is piped way thru the colontherapy machine. There is no odour and the client’s privacy is maintained
at all times. This flushing process is repeated a few times during a therapeutic treatment.
What is the Colon?
The Colon, or large intestine, as it is more commonly known is the end portion of the human digestive tract
(body’s food carrying passageway which extends from the mouth to the anus). The colon is approximately 1.5
metres long and 7 centimeters in diameter. Its major function is to eliminate waste and conserve water.
How can I tell if I have toxic material in my colon?
Toxic material is found throughout the body, particularly in fat tissue, joints, arteries, muscles, liver etc. Common
signs include headaches, constipation, fatigue, bad breath, body odor, irritability, confusion, skin blemishes,
abdominal gas, bloating, diarrhoea, sciatic pain, distention of the abdomen & excess weight. Intestinal toxicity is
part and parcel of many people’s everyday lives and prevalent in all societies. Colonic hydrotherapy gently
eliminates toxic waste improving the condition of the entire body.
How do toxins accumulate in the body?
Toxins accumulate in the body as a result of stress and/or consuming too much acidic food, such as sugar, white
flour caffeine and alcohol. When the bowel becomes acidic, it attempts to protect itself by secreting a glycoprotein substance that lines the entire intestinal wall; mucoid plaque. This plaque impairs the body’s ability to
absorb vitamins and nutrients, which could result in malnutrition.

When the bowel becomes toxic, it contaminates the blood, which in turn, spreads the toxins to the heart, lungs,
brain, muscles etc. The liver has to process this toxic blood, and after years of relentless toxicity, it will become
sluggish until it will no longer function efficiently. Colon cleansing helps remove mucoid plaque in order to rebuild
bowel and liver function.
Can you describe a healthy well – functioning bowel?
When one feels the urge to eliminate and immediately honours this by a trip to the toilet, elimination is quick and
painless and feels complete. Stools are medium to light brown, have very little odour and will break up in water.
How many daily movements does a healthy bowel have?
A healthy bowel may have two to three bowel movements daily, depending on what you eat.
Are there additional benefits I might expect from a colonic?
Working with a skilled therapist can be a very educational as you gain awareness of your body’s functioning and
nutritional requirements. The solar plexus is the emotional centre of the body and the transverse colon passes
through it. If an emotional event is unresolved, it often results in physical tension being stored in the solar plexus.
This can affect all organs of the area, including the colon. This on-going tightening of the colon muscle results in
diminished movement of faecal material through the colon, which is experienced as constipation. Not only do
colonics alleviate constipation, there can also be an emotional release leading to a better quality of life.
Will one colonic completely empty the colon?
Many of us have considerable amounts of impacted, hardened waste in our colons. A few treatments may be
necessary to eliminate this. As you become more aware of your colon, and as your body facilitates the cleansing
experience, your colon will release the stagnant waste.
How will I know when the colon it empty?
It will never be completely empty. The colon is an organ that is in continuous use. As more and more of the old
impacted waste is removed you will actually feel the water enter higher regions of the colon during treatments.
The objective of colonics is not to have an empty colon, but a well functioning colon.
Will a colonic clear up my skin?
Your skin is an important organ of elimination. If the colon, liver or kidneys are functioning poorly, the skin will be
required to make up the difference. Surface eruptions on the skin may occur due to toxins being released.
Cleansing and healing the colon diminishes the burden placed upon the skin, as well as the other organs of
elimination: lungs, liver and kidneys. As elimination is improved the skin will very often clear up.
Does a colonic wash out all the good bacteria (intestinal flora)?

Washing out putrefied matter and harmful bacteria in the large intestine can only help to increase the production
of good intestinal bacteria. When a bowel is “clogged” it is often overrun with toxins and bad bacteria, good
bacteria can only “breathe” and multiply in a clean environment. Cleaning the bowel helps the glands that
produce good bacteria work efficiently.
Is it embarrassing to get a colonic?
Not at all. You are in a private room with only your therapist who will guide you through the procedure. Your
therapist fully appreciates the sensitivity of the colonic procedure and your personal dignity is maintained at all
times and your emotions acknowledged and honored.
Is there any special preparation prior to a colonic session?
You are not required to fast before a colonic. Meals should be light on the day of your session, as you want the
body to focus on eliminating rather than assimilating. At least a litre per day of water in the days leading up to
your session & eating plenty of salads and fresh vegetables, eliminating processed foods & heavy
carbohydrates helps for a good colonic.
Can you explain the colonic procedure?
On your first visit, you will be asked complete a health history form. Your therapist will then take you into the
private colonic suite. Here, she will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have.
Prior to the procedure, your therapist will direct your into your own private ensuite and ask you to empty your
bladder. You will then change into a gown and enter the treatment room. Your therapist will ask guide you onto
the treatment bed, cover you with a towel, and ask you to roll onto your left side. Your therapist will gently insert
a small disposable speculum into your rectum, this is then connected to a disposable water and disposable
waste line. Your therapist will then ask you to roll onto your back for the procedure.(this information is for the
closed colonic system).
What will I feel?
The normal sensation to feel is a gentle arising and subsiding of the abdomen as the water goes into the body to
soften, soak and dislodge hardened and trapped deposits, and is then expelled together with the wastes. Your
therapist will combine the treatment with gentle abdominal massage to facilitate the release process.
Is a colonic uncomfortable?
Usually uncomfortable experiences result from resistance and tension within the bowel. When bowel problems
already exist cramps are sometimes the “normal” at home but it actually shows how unwell the bowel is. Your
colonic therapist is skilled at putting you at ease and minimizing discomfort; most people are relaxed with the
colonic and pleased with the unaccustomed sensation of feeling lighter, clean and clearer afterwards.
Required time for a colonic appointment?

The colonic treatment time is between 30 and 45 minutes. Bases upon the judgement of your therapist or the
wishes of your client it can be shorter than this. There will be 5 minutes required before treatment to empty the
bladder and change into a gown and 10 minutes required after so in all 1 hour is the usual required appointment
time. On your first visit only allow 1hr 15mins as a personal details and health form needs to be filled in.
I am a woman, what if I am menstruating ?
It’s perfectly safe and beneficial to have a colonic during your “period” some woman find having a colonic on the
day their period starts or just prior to it helps reduces the amount of congestion one experiences. If you are
prone to cramping I suggest leaving the colonic till after your period.
What can I expect afterwards ?
Hopefully you’ll feel great ! Probably feel lighter and enjoy a sense of well being. Most people after there first
colonic will remark that it was much better than they imagined. Any activities you normally do such as work and
exercise are fine to continue doing. For some, the colonic may trigger several subsequent bowel movements
afterwards but won’t be uncontrolled as matter continues to move down in the bowel.
How many treatments are recommended?
It is important to be aware of your objectives when having a colonic. For example if it is to overcome a life long
habit of constipation, ill health and bad eating habits and to achieve vital health again a change is needed on
your part. Then regular colonics for awhile will be needed such as weekly this is referred to as a “series”. How
many depends on the condition of your body and how well it responds to treatments. If your objective is to
recover from the flu or a short term problem then maybe one or two may be sufficient. Again this can only be
properly assessed once your objective has been identified and discussed with your therapist who will guide you
with information but the decision is entirely yours as everyone has restraints with budget and lifestyle.
Is a colonic good to include during a detox program, is it better at the beginning during or
end of a cleanse?
Whatever you do anything that increases the rate at which toxins are release into the bloodstream, it is essential
that you eliminate whatever you can through the colon. If you don’t you may unnecessarily experience increased
discomfort from toxins circulating in your blood stream, instead of being expelled from your body they merely recirculate and settle elsewhere in organs, muscles and tissues. Whether you use colonics or some other form of
elimination aid regular is more beneficial. A knowledgeable colon therapist can be of great assistance during any
cleansing program, a colonic scheduled at the beginning of a cleanse and your plan discussed will be beneficial
to the results achieved.
What kind of diet should I follow immediately after a Colon Hydrotherapy session?
Following a cleansing of the large intestinal, the body may feel weary or relaxed. This is simply your body
working out and processing through its cleaning period; proper rest is important at this time to give your body

time to rejuvenate.
Immediately after receiving Colon Hydrotherapy, it is important to:
•
Drink plenty of liquids (purified water, juices, herb teas and electrolyte liquids).
•
Eat a healthy vegetable soup within the next couple of hours.
•
Avoid eating raw vegetables straight after the treatment. Steamed vegetables and raw fruit are sufficient.
•
Reduce meat consumption (especially beef, pork as well as chicken), alcohol, caffeine and sugar intake.
Will laxatives accomplish the same result?
Laxatives empty the colon short term but are an irritant to the body. Therefore, the body produces a thin watery
substance that goes through the colon and leaves behind impacted toxins and waste. Colon hydrotherapy uses
pure water and does not irritate the body. One of the tremendous benefits is that it actually hydrates the body.
Are there any contraindications to Colon Hydrotherapy?
There are a few contra-indications to keep in mind when considering colon hydrotherapy, including recent colon
and abdominal surgeries. Other conditions such as active infections, active inflammation (such as diverticulitis,
Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis), a painful fissure or painful haemorrhoids mean treatment cannot be
comfortably carried out until they are healed or in remission.
Diseases such as congestive heart disease, severe uncontrolled hypertension, severe anaemia, liver cirrhosis,
kidney disease, severe haemorrhaging and colo-rectal carcinoma are also absolute contra-indications for
treatment as are some physical conditions such as severe abdominal or inguinal hernias which cannot be easily
reduced. Treatments are also not performed on pregnant woman. We thouroughly check the suitability of each
individual prior to starting any treatment. In some cases, we may refer you to your doctor for further
examinations to assess suitability for treatment.

A Journey Through Your Intestines
To have healthy bowel movements, it’s essential that you support colon and rectal health with all of your daily
choices. Keeping these areas clean and healthy provides a lowered risk of cancer, irritable bowel syndrome,
hemorrhoids, less gas and a more efficient absorption of water and minerals. You will also experience a feeling
of lightness, comfort and well-being in your abdominal region.
Your colon and rectum are collectively referred to as your large intestine, which is the last part of your digestive
tract.
After food passes through your stomach and small intestine, the remaining material, mostly waste products in
liquid form, move on to the your colon, which is the first part of your large intestine.
Your colon is approximately six feet long and serves primarily to dehydrate liquid waste material.
Your colon begins at the lower right hand corner of your abdomen, where it’s called your cecum. Attached to
your cecum is a twisted, worm-shaped tube called your appendix.
From your cecum, your colon travels up the right side of your abdomen, where it’s called your ascending colon.
When it reaches your lower right ribs (just below your liver), it turns to travel across your abdomen to just below
your lower left ribs; here, it’s called your transverse colon.
Just below your lower left ribs, it makes another turn and travels down the left side of your abdomen – this
portion is called your descending colon.
Your colon then makes one last turn toward the middle of your lower abdomen, forming an “S” shaped segment
that’s called your sigmoid colon.
Your sigmoid colon empties waste materials into your rectum, which is like a storage pouch that retains your
feces until contractions in your large intestine stimulate a bowel movement.
Movement of Waste Material
After you eat a substantial meal, your stomach expands enough to trigger a reflex that causes a contractile wave
(called a peristaltic wave) to travel through your small intestine and push any liquid waste material (chyme) that
is sitting in the last part of your small intestine into your large intestine.
Once enough liquid waste material accumulates in your cecum (the first part of your large intestine), the waste
material begins to move up your ascending colon.
Movement of waste material through your colon is facilitated by something called “haustral churning.” Your colon
is divided along its length into small pouches called haustra. When a haustrum is filled with substantial waste
material, its muscular walls contract and push the waste material into the next haustrum. The contractile reflex
that allows haustral churning is regulated by your enteric nervous system, which is a division of your autonomic
nervous system.

Your autonomic nervous system is regulated involuntarily (without regular conscious input on your part), and is
intertwined with your emotional health. This is why bowel movements and colon health are intricately tied to
emotional states like feeling calm or anxious.
Water and Nutrient Absorption
The mucosal lining of your large intestine is lined with tiny pits that open into long, tube-like intestinal glands;
these glands are lined with specialized cells that absorb water, and other specialized cells (goblet cells) that
release mucous into your large intestine to lubricate your stools and to protect the lining of your large intestine
against acidic substances and potentially harmful gases.
The specialized cells that absorb water from your waste materials are responsible for about 10 percent of the
water that you absorb from the foods and beverages that you ingest; the remaining 90 percent is absorbed by
cells that line your small intestine.
This 10 percent of water absorption in your large intestine amounts to anywhere between a pint and a quart of
water, and represents a significant portion of your body’s daily intake of water. As water is absorbed from the
waste material in your colon, so are some nutrients, mainly minerals like sodium and chloride.
It can take anywhere from three to ten hours for your large intestine to absorb enough water from waste material
to turn it into solid or partially solid stools. Your stools consist mainly of water, mucous, fiber, old cells from your
intestinal lining, millions of microorganisms, and small amounts of inorganic salts.
When your rectal pouch is distended with enough feces to trigger a contractile reflex, your feces are pushed out
through your anus. When you consciously contract your abdominal wall, your diaphragm moves downward and
helps open up muscles that line your anal sphincter.
Your rectum is lined with three horizontal folds, called your rectal valves; these valves are what prevent stools
from passing through your anal sphincter when you pass gas.
If you choose not to release stools when you experience the urge to do so, your reflex contractions may stop, in
which case you likely won’t have a significant bowel movement until the next mass peristalsis occurs.
Three main causes of diarrhea are:
•
Undesirable microorganisms
•
Food intolerances (like lactose intolerance)
•
Stress
In the first two cases listed above, it makes sense that your body would want things to move quickly through
your system; your body doesn’t want to spend time digesting foods that it can’t properly extract nutrients from or
that are laced with disease-causing microbes.
Stress can cause transit time to shorten by messing with your enteric nervous system; please recall that your
enteric nervous system controls the reflex contractions that mark “haustral churning.” Your enteric nervous
system is a part of your autonomic nervous system, and your autonomic nervous system regulates your
physiological responses to emotional and physical stress.

When waste material travels through your colon more slowly than it should, enough water is extracted from your
waste material to cause your stools to become uncomfortably hard.
Five main causes of constipation are:
•
Eating sporadically, or eating meals that are too small to elicit mass peristalsis.
•
Not going when you feel an urge to go.
•
Lack of a healthy intestinal lining that is capable of producing enough mucous to properly lubricate your
stools (vitamin A deficiency is a potential cause of this situation).
•
Insufficient intake of water, water-rich foods, and/or fiber-rich foods.
•
Stress.
Steps You Can Take To Have Healthy Bowel Movements
Eat regular meals
Each time you eat a meal, you stimulate stretch receptors in your stomach that are responsible for triggering
normal and mass peristaltic waves throughout your small and large intestines. These natural contractile waves
promote regular movement of waste material through your colon and rectum.
Also, eating regular substantial meals allows significant boluses (roundish masses) of waste materials to travel
together through your colon, turn into well formed stools, and get eliminated from your body in an efficient
manner.
Don’t suppress the desire to go.
If you regularly suppress the urge to have a bowel movement, waste materials spend more time than is optimal
in your colon, causing excessive dehydration of these materials and formation of hard stools.
Ensure adequate intake of water and/or water-rich foods.
Water helps to move waste materials along, and is absorbed throughout the entire length of your colon.
Insufficient water intake can cause stools to form far before waste materials reach your rectal pouch, which can
cause constipation.
Eat fiber-rich foods regularly.
Fiber adds bulk to the boluses of waste material that travel through your large intestine, and this bulk is essential
to your colon’s ability to turn waste materials into well formed stools.
A diet that is rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains ensures high fiber intake.
Ensure adequate vitamin A status.
The glands that line the mucosal lining of your colon are responsible for releasing mucous that is needed to
lubricate your feces; vitamin A is needed to maintain the health of these specialized cells that release mucous.
It’s best to ensure adequate vitamin A status by eating healthy foods that contain vitamin A.
Ensure adequate intake of healthy fats.
All of your cells, including those of your large intestine and nervous system, require a constant influx of
undamaged fatty acids and cholesterol to remain fully functional. If you don’t ensure adequate intake of healthy

fats, your nervous system and the smooth muscles that surround your digestive passageway – both of which are
responsible for creating peristaltic waves throughout your digestive tract – may deteriorate in function.
Also, intake of healthy fats is necessary for optimal absorption of fat-soluble vitamin A, which, as mentioned
above, is critical to building and maintaining the mucosal lining of your colon.
Healthy foods that are rich in healthy fats include: avocados, organic eggs, olives, extra-virgin olive oil, coconut
oil, coconuts, raw nuts, raw seeds, and cold-water fish.

Large populations of friendly bacteria can keep your digestive tract clean and healthy by:

Promoting optimal digestion, thereby preventing build-up of toxic waste materials.
