ABSTRACT
Depletion of ozone layer is one of the critical environmental issues. Ozone layer
is a stratospheric layer that plays an important role in providing support to
humans for their survival because it filters out incoming radiation from the Sun
i.e., Ultraviolet rays, without which human health and environment are effected.
Ultraviolet radiations are high energy electromagnetic waves released by the
sun which if enters the earth’s atmosphere can lead to various environmental
issues including global warming.
Various gases such as CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons), HCFCs (hydro
chlorofluorocarbons) and other organo-halogens produced by a myriad of
human activities contributes to depletion of ozone layer that results in
negatively affecting the plants, humans and the whole environment or
ecological balance besides increasing the number of respiratory diseases in
humans. The cause of UV rays also decreases the crop production. However UV
rays is required in optimum intensity for both plant and animals. The objective
of this paper is to review the origin, causes, and effects of ozone layer depletion
as well as its protective measures.
