Greenhouse Pest Management I will be able to explain what greenhouse pests are and how to get rid of them by completing a greenhouse pest project. Pests Can be any of the following: Insects Vertebrates Nematodes Weeds Pathogens Fungal Bacterial Viral Pests Can be any of the following: Insects Vertebrates Nematodes Weeds Pathogens Fungal Bacterial Viral Greenhouse Weeds Greenhouse Weeds Greenhouse weeds are adaptable, have short lifecycles, and are very prolific seeders Greenhouse weed control is important from an aesthetic standpoint as well as from a pest control standpoint Weeds can harbor insects as well as diseases Common Greenhouse Weeds Wood sorrel (Clover) Bittercress Spotted Spurge Crabgrass Greenhouse Insects Insects Life Cycle Eggs Crawler Growing (Instar) Adult Insects Are any life forms competing for resources Plants or animals Organism which pose a threat to other organisms’ health 2 groups Chewing insects cause damage to plants by chewing foliage caterpillars, beetles and grasshoppers Sucking insects have mouthparts designed to pierce and suck aphids, leafhoppers and mites Major Greenhouse Pests Whiteflies Mealybugs & Scales Mites (spider mites, broad mites, & etc.) Thrips Leafminers Nuisance Pests (fungus gnats and shore flies) Greenhouse Diseases Disease Is any condition interfering with normal growth and development Is caused by living or non-living agents Can affect any area on a plant 14 Types of Diseases Fungi Bacterial Virus Fungal Diseases Spread from plant-to-plant via wind, insects, rain, soil and machinery Can be transmitted by seeds Can be waterborne Are most common and easiest to treat Usually start with spotted or discolored leaves and stems dry, brown margins and dead tissue or necrotic lesions Bacterial Diseases Are easier to prevent rather than cure Enter plants through wounds or natural openings, such as the stomata Easily occur under the following conditions: high humidity poor air circulation irregular watering poor soil drainage fluctuating temperatures Bacterial Diseases Spread by: infected seeds animals and birds irrigation water and rain machinery Have symptoms such as: leaf spots blights wilting Viruses Are microscopic, infectious agents consisting of a protein coat surrounding nucleic acid Multiply in cells of living hosts Are recognized by the following symptoms: leaf curling leaf discoloration ring spots on leaves stunted growth Assignment This will be an on going assignment that we will build on.
