CityLife/Zaha Hadid residential complex, Milan
Variation in wave form
The multi-storey façades in the residential complex
designed by Zaha Hadid – part of the Milan CityLife project
– find expression in wave form, playing with shapes,
colours and materials. Schüco Italia facilitated the
construction of this elegant building design by specifically
adapting the window, façade and sliding door systems
from Schüco to suit the design.
CityLife has been one of the largest urban regeneration projects
in Europe in recent years. Following a master plan developed
by Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki and Daniel Libeskind, the project
combines living, working and shopping with green spaces and
public areas to form one holistic concept in an area near the
historical centre of Milan. The residential complex, which was
designed by Zaha Hadid offers luxurious living spaces from
small apartments to two-storey penthouses, is located in the
southern section of the project area.
An ensemble of seven building structures
The residential development comprises a total of seven
buildings of varying heights, and is arranged as an open block
construction which is broken up by green areas and spaces.
The aspect which connects the different buildings is the elegant
façade design that meanders horizontally and vertically. Ribbon
windows, balconies, as well as glazed and closed spandrel
areas move fluently between cantilevered and recessed
designs. There is further variation in the different façade
materials used, such as white panels or areas made from
natural wood and glass. The multi-storey, often diagonal

arrangement of the units creates a striking building envelope.
Even though the pattern is recurring, new variations in the
design have been realised on all levels of this building.
Functionally and aesthetically effective special solutions
The architecture of the residential complex designed by Zaha
Hadid is as individual as it is ingenious and functional. Thanks
to the special products developed by Schüco Italia, the façades
fulfilled high technical requirements such as wind and rain
protection for the upper floors, and the thermal insulation met
demands in terms of ecology and sustainability.
The numerous panels and natural wood surfaces of varying
dimensions are combined with the Schüco FW 60+ façade
system modified specifically for this project and special versions
of the Schüco AWS 75 aluminium window construction. The
slimline, floor-to-ceiling glazing is interrupted in many places by
the Schüco ASS 50 lift-and-slide system, which allows easy
access to the balconies with views of the Alps and the city.
Schüco – System solutions for windows, doors and façades
Together with its worldwide network of partners, architects, specifiers and
investors, Schüco creates sustainable building envelopes that focus on people
and their needs in harmony with nature and technology. Metal and PVC-U
window, door and façade solutions from Schüco meet the highest
requirements in terms of design, comfort and security. At the same time, CO2
emissions are reduced through energy efficiency, thereby conserving natural
resources. The company delivers tailored products for newbuilds and
renovations, designed to meet individual user needs in all climate zones.

The tallest of the seven flowing building structures which form
the "Zaha Hadid residential complex" in Milan.
The building envelopes consist of different-sized panels
interspersed with areas of natural wood.
The brilliant white walls give way to typical pointy balconies,
stretching the structure and create differentiation in each floor of
the building.
