APPLICATION PROCESS
To apply for a Façade Grant, please complete an application form
(enclosed or on our web site www.eatontonmainstreet.com); in
addition, you must submit additional information according to the
grid opposite. There are maximum amounts awarded depending
upon the work to be done. Exceptions may be made in unusual
circumstances such as corner buildings (more than one façade), very
large areas to be painted or other situations on a case by case basis.
Eatonton Main Street reserves the right to refuse any application not
approved by the Design Committee or if funds are not available.
The following are not eligible for façade grants:
- Tax delinquent property
- Property in litigation, condemnation or receivership
- Property owned by a 501C3 on which taxes are not levied
- National franchises or retail chain stores
The Eatonton Design Committee is sensitive to historic preservation
and applicants will be expected to propose design consistent with the
historic character of the building.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE RECEIVED AN APPROVAL
LETTER FROM THE DESIGN COMMITTEE BEFORE
STARTING WORK. We make every effort to review and approve
applications in a timely manner. The process is typically smoother if
you consult a Design Specialist BEFORE you submit an application.
Once approved, you will be reimbursed for the approved amount
upon satisfactory completion of work and subsequent presentation
of a paid, dated, vendor invoice to Eatonton Main Street.

this is by no means a complete list.
Government approvals, building permits and taxes will not be
reimbursed.
OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION
When planning your new façade keep in mind that your building is an
integral part of the historic streetscape of Eatonton. Your changes
should reflect and complement the character of the surrounding area
as far as possible.
Façade- is the entire exposed exterior surface of a building that fronts a

look good!
public street. Any elevation not containing the main entrance but fronting a
public street exposed to public view will be considered a secondary elevation
and may be eligible for a façade grant.
Storefronts- typically should have plain (clear low-E) storefront glass facing
the street. If the traditional storefront has been compromised, it is preferable
to reinstate the large storefront glass for future retail use. Original doors
(often with glass panels) should be retained. Do not install residential style
doors on a commercial building.
Masonry- the worst thing you can do to old bricks is sandblasting or use
other abrasive methods. This causes spalling and over time the bricks will be
lost. The second worst thing is using hard “cement” or “ quickcrete” for
pointing. Softer (Type N) mortar should be used. The third worst thing you
can do is paint unpainted brick. Once you paint, you have a maintenance task
for life; removing the paint is very difficult and costly.
Windows- should be repaired or replicated with original materials as far as
possible. If original windows have been replaced with aluminum, there is a
paint primer that will allow the raw aluminum to be painted, which makes it
look better. Avoid changing the number, shape or position of windows. Avoid
filling in window openings; we encourage you to reinstate transoms or other
windows previously blocked. Extra light in a retail store is a good thing.
THESE ARE BRIEF GUIDELINES. PLEASE ASK FOR A COPY OF “DESIGNING
DOWNTOWN” a DCA publication, for additional information.
