Civil war timeline • 1861 – 1865 • David Rodgers 1861 THE SOUTH SECEDES – January 1861 Abraham Lincoln is the president of the untied stated of America. -Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas, - - Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina and south Carolina. These states became the “confederate states of America” They create a confederate government in February 1861. Jefferson Davis was named president of the confederacy ----- 1861 • THE SOUTH SEIZES FEDERAL FORTS – February 1861 • President Buchan refused to surrender southern federal forts to the seceding states State troops sized them south Carolina refused a supply ship at fort Sumter, the ship was trying to supply the federal government • • • - ATTACK ON FORT SUMTER – April Lincoln told the southern states, south Carolina Sensed a trick, forced surrender on rob Andersen, shots were fired on at the fort, civil war began April 12th 1861 the battle of bull run, July 1861 the union army encounters a small amount of confederate soldiers, the battle was supposed to be a blowout by the union, the battle showed how poorly trained both sides armies were, although it was expect union to win, the confederates win and the remaining union is retreats to Washington 1862 • THE BATTLE OF SHILOH – April 1862 • • Confederates attack union Federal forces almost defeated until later in the night when reinforcements arrive, finally confederated forces retreated, casualties were high on both sides. • THE SEVEN DAY’S BATTLES – July 1862 • union and confederates fought a series of battles between June 26th to July 2nd Confederates withdrew on the last day ANTIETAM – September 1862 confederate forces crossed union forces in Maryland it was referred to as the bloodiest day in the war, there was no clear winner • • • 1863 • THE EMANCIPATION PROCLOMATION – January 1863 • Abraham Lincoln wrote that all slaves that fought against the union would be freed, because of the emancipation proclamation over four million slaves were freed. • • • THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG July 1863 Fought from July 1st to July 3rd Was another one of the bloodiest battles in the civil war In the three days between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers were killed • • The union army was victorious 1864 THE BATTLE OF THE COLD HARBOR – June 1864 - Around 13,000 soldiers from the Union Army were killed About 2,500 soldiers from the Confederate Army were killed The Confederate Army were the winners of this battle 1865 • The last year • The confederate army started to slowly deteriorate as of January 1865 • • The confederate army surrendered April 1865 The civil war lasted four years, with very large amounts of casualties
