Definition:
A drug that reversibly depresses the activity of the central nervous
system, used chiefly to induce sleep and to allay anxiety (Medical Dictionary).

Note: Rohypnal is illegal in the United States and is considered to be one of the most
addictive of the benzodiazepines. It is 10 times more powerful than valium.

Side effects of sedative-hypnotics are much like alcoholIf used in small doses, sedative-hypnotics and alcohol produce calmness and relax
muscles.
If used in large doses they can cause, slurred speech, memory loss, irritability, changes
in alertness, decreased interpersonal functioning, staggering gait, poor judgment and
slow uncertain reflexes. If used for long periods of time a person can build up a
tolerance and become addicted.
Sedative-Hypnotics Withdrawal Symptoms:
-Severe anxiety, fatigue, irritability
-Dysphoria, sleep disturbance
-Tremor, muscle pain, seizures
-Perceptual changes
Sedative-Hypnotics Detrimental Effects:
-Addiction
-Seizures
-Amnesia
-Criminal Behavior
-Miscarriage
-Phobias
-Loss of Job
