Purpose configured Liebherr luffing jib cranes ensure fast construction schedule for new 40-storey tower in Singapore Two Liebherr 355 HC-L 18/32 Litronic luffing jib cranes have been configured to climb in stages of six storeys at a time, by Takenaka Corporation on a project in Singapore’s Central Business District, Takenaka Corporation is using two Liebherr 355 HC-L 18/32 Litronic luffing jib cranes specifically configured to climb in increments of six storeys at a time to construct a 40-storey office building in Singapore’s Central Business District. Owned by Ho Lee Machinery Pte Ltd, both cranes were supplied by Liebherr Singapore and have been delivered under a two-year rental agreement with Takenaka. Located in Singapore’s Market Street the project has been named CapitaGreen and will provide Grade A office space in an area that is densely populated with high-rise towers. In order to maximise construction productivity, Takenaka Corporation, in a designand-build agreement, has devised a 20 % saving in construction time, reducing what would normally be a completion period of about 40 months to 32 months. Benjamin Tan, managing director of Ho Lee Machinery, says that the structure is being built of steel, and to ensure that the growth of the frame and the construction of the lift shafts and the floor slabs are synchronised, the two internal climbing Liebherr 355 HC-L cranes are being jacked up six floors at a time. “The construction is very fast, and the site is working 24 hours a day,” he says. “In our discussions with the contractor it was decided that it would be logistically easier to jack the cranes up six storeys at a time, and that is why we decided to invest in these two new 355 HC-L units. -2“The mast for the HC-L range comes with the options of standard or reinforced elements, and if you use a reinforced frame mast you have a better free-standing height. “Only Liebherr supplies cranes in Singapore that can be configured in this way. “The cranes are not located in the lift shafts, but are placed in voids next to the lift bank, allowing the contractor to progress faster with the steel erecting. “Only six jacking stages will be needed for the two cranes for the building to reach its full height.” Ho Lee Machinery is the specialist crane rental division of the Ho Lee Group of companies, and has 15 Liebherr cranes of varying models in its 60-strong fleet of hire cranes. CapitaGreen is being built on the site of the old Market Street Car Park and will reach a height of 248 m. The project has an innovative design that minimises solar heat gain with an energyefficient double skin of high-performance glass and extensive vertical greenery. A large expanse of greenery as well as sky terraces on levels 14 and 26 will help to reduce heat gain, and a cool void at the centre core will allow air to flow through the building. The high floor-to-ceiling height of 3.2 m will allow plentiful natural lighting, thus creating a feeling of spaciousness. Other sustainable design strategies include water-saving techniques such as rainwater harvesting to irrigate the building’s plants. CapitaGreen is being constructed on a site of 5,478 m² and will have a total floor area of 82,400 m². A typical floor plate ranges from 1,858 m² to 2,322 m². In addition to the two 355 HC-L 18/32 Litronic cranes, which were installed on site in February, a Liebherr 160 HC-L 8/16 Litronic luffing jib unit will be installed externally in November this year. This unit will climb alongside the structure as an externally jacked crane. The HC-L range has been designed for work on particularly high buildings and in restricted spaces. At Market Street the proximity of neighbouring tower blocks, along with the necessity to avoid crane booms overflying the busy streets below, made the use of luffing jib units a vital part of the project. The 355 HC-L 18/32 Litronic has a maximum radius of 60 m at which the lift capacity is 4.2 t, and a maximum lift of 32 t. The 160 HC-L 8/16 Litronic can lift a maximum load of 16 t, or 2 t when the 55 m jib is fully extended. -3The 70-degree angle at which the HC-L series jibs can be raised enables several crane hooks to work in a restricted space simultaneously, and thereby further help to ease the logistics of materials delivery and erection. Both Liebherr 355 HC-L 18/32 Litronic units at CapitaGreen are sited close together, and on the building being topped out, one unit will be used to dismantle the other. The remaining unit will be dismantled by the 160 HC-L, which itself as an external crane will then be dismantled in the standard way. This method of crane removal will save on the cost of using a derrick crane to dismantle the internal climbing cranes. - End - LIEB171A FOOTNOTE TO EDITORS This press release is available on the Joem Promotions website: www.joempr.com Issued on behalf of Liebherr-Werk Biberach GmbH by Joem Promotions.
