Ancient Greece Written and Illustrated by Phillip Martin Ancient Greece Greek civilization started about 4000 years ago on the island of Crete. Ancient Greece Greece was not one country. It split into city states, each with its own kind of government. The two most important were Athens and Sparta Ancient Greece Sparta and Athens couldn’t have been more different. While democracy and philosophy flourished in Athens, the Spartans prepared for war. They were Greece’s best warriors. Ancient Greece Today you cannot visit ancient Sparta and see a great city as you can with Athens. Spartans didn’t build a great city. They prepared for war. They didn’t even grow crops because slaves did that for them. Ancient Greece The Greeks fought among themselves a lot, but they united when they faced a common enemy. That enemy was frequently Persia. There was one other event that united the Greeks, for a while. Ancient Greece The Olympic Games began in Greece to honor Zeus in 776 BC. If city-states were at war, they declared a truce so athletes could be able to participate in the games at Olympia. Ancient Greece The Greeks gave us democracy, the theater, philosophy, mathematics, art, trial by jury, architecture and even the yo-yo. Ancient Greece Their first two letters, alpha and beta, are used to create the English word alphabet. Ancient Greece Greek architecture was based on mathematical principles. There were three styles of columns. Doric Ionic Corinthian Ancient Greece One of the most famous buildings is the Parthenon on top of the Acropolis. It was built by the people of Athens to honor the goddess Athena, the patron of the city. Ancient Greece The Greeks had many gods and goddesses. There were hundreds of them!
