Word Study Homework Name _________________________ #______ Date Started _____________ 1. Choose a word sort. Practice Sort: Use headings and anchor words. Sort words while reading each word aloud. Discuss why the words are grouped as they are. Open Sort: Sort your words without headings and anchor words. Find patterns within the words and group them together into new categories that make sense to you. (Example categories: Nouns/verbs, # of syllables, etc…) Blind Sort: This is to be done with someone at home. Place down the headings and anchor words only. Have someone call out the words without showing the cards. Point to the column where the word belongs. This encourages visualizing the word as opposed to just seeing it. Writing Sort: Write the headings at the top of your page. Have someone at home call out 10 or more words and you write it on your paper under the correct heading. Speed Sort: Sort your words and time yourself (use a stopwatch or the second hand on a clock/watch). Resort and time yourself again to see if you can beat your previous time. Record your best time. 2. Choose an activity on the back of this paper. *Please take time each day to engage your child in meaningful ways to practice their word study words! 3. Check off and record your daily activities here and have an adult sign. Only this sheet needs to be turned into me on the day of your test. The result will be a pyramid. Example: f fl fla flas flash Meaningful Sentences: Use your word study words in a detailed sentence that shows you understand the meaning of the word. You may use more than one word study word in a sentence. Syllables: Divide your spelling words into syllables (put * between each syllable. Example: Fam*i*ly) Word Hunt: Find words in books, newspapers, magazines, etc… that match your weekly word pattern. Learning Aid: Choose five words you think are the most difficult. Make a learning aid to help you learn the spellings. (Example: Connecticut – connect – I – Cut or draw a picture) Dictionary Definitions: Use the dictionary to define at least 35 words you need help understanding. Spelling City: Log on to my webpage to find a link to spellingcity.com. Type in which words you would like to practice and play a game online! Scrabble Spelling: Use the letter tiles below to find the value of your word when adding the letters together. Story Time: Write a short story using as many of your words as you can.
