WHAT IS ISLAM?
• Abrahamic Religion: traces it’s roots to Abraham (1 of 3; includes
Judaism and Christianity
• Islam = Submission to God/Peace
• Muslim = “one who submits”; people that practice Islam
• Christians are people who practice
Christianity
-Jews are people who practice Judaism
• Mono-theistic
WHAT IS ISLAM?
• Belief in one God; Allah = Arabic for “The God”
• Muslims believe:
• Share some of the stories of Old and New Testament
• Do NOT believe Jesus was son of God
simply a prophet, Do NOT believe
Jesus died on cross
• Believe Islam was the faith of Abraham,
Moses, Noah, Jesus, even Adam…
WHO IS MUHAMMAD
• Descendent of Abraham and Ishmael (son of Abraham and handmaid Hagar)
• The final (last) prophet of God
-Prophet = one who shares the will of God
• Creates the formal religion of Islam
• Spreads the religion of Islam
• Creates the first Islamic state (a region that practices
Islam as official religion)
QUAR’AN – SACRED ISAMIC TEXT
• The word of God (Allah)
• Revealed to Muhammad through angel Gabriel over 23 years (revelations)
• Created between 7th and 8th century, written after Muhammad’s death
• A guide to faithful living in ALL aspects of life
• Social, legal, ethical systems
QUAR’AN – SACRED ISAMIC TEXT
• Who wrote the Quar’an?
• Allah? Muhammad? The Arabs?
• Companions of Muhammad
• Caliph Uthman – a direct descendant of
Muhammad, Compiled (put together)

EARLY TEACHINGS MUHAMMAD
• No idol worship
• Infanticide of girls banned
• Polygamy limited (3 at most, but one preferable)
• Divorce—limited
• Slavery—limited
• Help the poor
• War bad except in self defense
• Jerusalem=holy city—pray towards it
• Friday = holy day
