From Earth to Atoms
The Stuff of Life
Biosphere
• The part of the earth and its atmosphere in
which living organisms exist or that is
capable of supporting life.
• This picture illustrates the density of
plankton in the ocean and vegetation on land
Ecosystem
An ecological community together with its
environment, (all of the living and non
living parts) functioning as a unit.
• The plants, animals,
soil, air and water that
interact in an area are
all parts of an
ecosystem
• The soil itself is full of
life. Bacteria, fungi,
plant roots, insects,
worms and other
invertebrates.
Millions of bacteria
and fungi cells can be
found in a table spoon
of soil.
Community
Community
• The community
is made up of
the populations
of all the living
things
interacting in an
area.
• Community =
Ecosystem –
non-living stuff
Population
• A group of individuals of the same
species living in one area
Individual organism
• A single organism
(part of a
population.)
• An Organism is a
living thing
Other organisms
• A bacteria, mushroom
and a tree are all
examples of
organisms
Cells
Organisms are made up of cells
• Animal Cell
Plant Cell
Some organisms are single celled
• This is a
bacteria cell
Organelles
Organelles are the small parts of cells that
perform different functions.
• Chloroplasts
synthesize energy in
plant cells
• The mitochondria is
where glucose is
“burned” to release
energy to the cell
Molecules
• A molecule is
made up of
atoms
• These
chlorophyll
molecules help
capture the
sun’s energy in
the
chloroplasts.
This phospholipid molecules makes up an
important part of cell membranes
• Glucose is one of the
molecules we use for
energy
A molecules that helps determine who we
are, what we look like
Atoms:
The smallest unit of an element
• Carbon
• Phosphorus
Nitrogen
Oxygen
Sub atomic Particles
• Protons, Neutrons and Electrons make up atoms
