The Muscular System
Three types of Muscle
•Cardiac
•Smooth
•Skeletal
Cardiac Muscle
• Cardiac muscles are those that make up the heart. Though similar to
striated in appearance, cardiac are also involuntary. They work
together to pump blood to and from the heart and throughout the
body.
Smooth Muscle
• Smooth – Smooth muscles are known as involuntary or visceral
muscles, and are controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Lines
your intestinal walls and aids in digestion
Skeletal Muscle
• Skeletal- skeletal muscles, are those the body has conscious control
of. These include those in the face and those that move all the bones
of the body. Striated muscles are made of light and dark bands called
fibrils. They are the ones typically injured in sports or during physical
activity
Voluntary vs Involuntary Muscle Contraction
• A Voluntary muscle contraction is a contraction that you have control
over your body.
• Body movements
• Involuntary muscle contraction is a contraction that is triggered by
the nervous system in which you have no control.
• Digestion
How many muscles are in the human body ?
640
FAST TWITCH vs SLOW TWITCH MUSCLE
• Slow Twitch (Type I)
The slow muscles are more efficient at using oxygen to generate more
fuel (known as ATP) for continuous, extended muscle contractions
over a long time. They fire more slowly than fast twitch fibers and can
go for a long time before they fatigue.
• So Which type of athlete would benefit from slow twitch muscle
fibers ?
A) marathon Runner
B) Soccer Forward
ANSWER :
A
Fast Twitch (Type II)
• Because fast twitch fibers use anaerobic metabolism to create fuel,
they are much better at generating short bursts of strength or speed
than slow muscles. However, they fatigue more quickly.
• Fast twitch fibers generally produce the same amount of force per contraction
as slow muscles, but they get their name because they are able to fire more
rapidly.
• So Which Athlete will benefit from fast twitch muscle fibers?
A) A defensive line man B) A 400 sprinter
Answer:
B
WHAT IS THE KREBS CYCLE ?
• The Krebs cycle (or citric acid cycle) is a part of cellular respiration.
Named after Hans Krebs, it is a series of chemical reactions used by all
aerobic organisms to generate energy. Its importance to many
biochemical pathways suggests that it was one of the earliest parts of
cellular metabolism to evolve.[1]
• The Krebs cycle comes after the link reaction and provides the
hydrogen and electrons needed for the electron transport chain. It
takes place inside mitochondria.

What does it look like and how does this tie into
muscle contraction ?
• With out this cycle you would not contract …its really important
When it all comes together
• steps of a muscle contraction
