First go through the famous people in the left column with students to ensure they
know who each person is.

Matsu Basho – (1644-1694) Japanese Haiku poet.
Julius Caesar – (100 – 43 BC)
Dr. William S. Clark – (1826-1856) – American who helped found Sapporo
Agriculture College (present agriculture department of Hokkaido University).

Students will then attempt to match the author with the quotation. Several ways to
elicit answers – the key is to practice reported speech (Who said…? / What did he
say?”)
