Topic 1
Title: Class differences in education: External factors
• Social class still has a significant impact on educational
achievement in the UK.
• But what do we mean when we say social class?
• Most sociologists use parental occupation to determine a
pupil’s social class
• For example:
Just as O2 says be more dog, in sociology, I say be more
toddler and always ask….
But
Why???
So why does the job your parents do have an impact on how well you do in
education?
List as many reasons as you can
A lot of the things we’ve just been talking about
will come under these sociological headings
• Cultural deprivation- This theory argues that working
class culture and parenting styles means that children
from a working class background will be educationally
disadvantaged
• Key sociologists, Douglas & Sugarman, Burnstein
Keddie
• Material deprivation- This theory argues that economic
poverty is a big factor in low achievement in school
• Cultural capital- This theory argues that middle class
children have a ‘right’ language, experiences and
connections to succeed in school
We will look at these in more detail in future lessons
Cultural deprivation in focus
• Language• Hubbs Tait (2002) et all found that where parents
use language that challenges their children,
cognative performance improves, Feinstein
(2008)found that educated parents are more
likely to use language in this way
• Parent’s education• Working –class subculture-
