Immunizations protect you – and your community
The school year starts soon. And that means it’s time to make sure your children are up to date with their immunizations. But
vaccinations aren’t just for kids. They’re recommended throughout a person’s lifetime.
Many infectious diseases that were once common in this country have been controlled by vaccines. Vaccines have reduced
and, in some cases, eliminated many diseases that used to routinely kill or harm tens of thousands of infants, children and
adults.
The viruses and bacteria that cause these diseases and death still exist. People who are not protected by vaccines can
become infected. Vaccine-preventable diseases have a costly impact, resulting in doctors’ visits, hospitalizations and deaths.
Sick children can also cause parents to lose time from work.
When children and adults get the recommended vaccinations, the whole community is protected. The spread of disease causing bacteria or viruses is stopped, lowering the risk that unimmunized peop le will be exposed to disease-causing agents.
This type of protection is known as community or herd immunity. Protecting most people with safe, effective vaccines also
protects those who cannot be immunized for medical reasons. So when you get your immuniz ations, you’re protecting not
only yourself and your family, but also your community.
