NATIONAL ANTHEMS ONLINE
THE PHILIPPINES: Lupang Hinirang
The title means The Chosen Land and the song was composed in 1898 by Julian Felipe who
was born in Cavite City. At an early age he showed talent in music and studied both piano and
organ. He eventually became organist of St. Peter's Parish Church and around the same time
started writing music. He was a music teacher and composer and was appointed by then
President Emilio Aguinaldo as Director of the National Band of the First Philippine Republic.
When Emilio Aguinaldo came to power, he commissioned Felipe to compose “something
stirring and majestic which can inspire our men to fight the enemy". Originally the anthem
didn't have lyrics but in 1899 words were adapted from the Spanish poem Filipinas written by
José Palma. The new anthem was first performed at the proclamation of Philippine
independence on 12th June 1898.
The printed music is often written in 2/4 time with dotted rhythms but in practice, triplets are
nearly always played and sung. This arrangement is written in 6/8 time and is an attempt to
recreate the performance style of the anthem as heard on Philippine radio and television.
Sometimes several long side-drum rolls are played before the start of the anthem and the
repeats are always observed.
