Renovation of the Heart
Session 2:
What are you
made of?
Renovation of the Heart
• Who brings about this transformation of our
hearts?
• Do we still believe that God is still working to
renovate your heart?
– “…he who began a good work in you will carry it
on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
(Phil 1:6)
– “You, however, are controlled not by the sinful
nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in
you.” (Rom 8:9)

Spiritual Formation- the process of God’s Spirit
shaping our spirit to be what he intends us to
be
– Walk in step with the Spirit
– Be like Jesus
Understanding Yourself
• Understanding allows for proper care of
yourself, both of the body and the soul
• “Heart,” “Soul,” “Spirit,” and “Will” are words
describing the same part of the human
– Will is this part’s power to decide and choose
– Spirit and Soul describe this part’s nonmaterial
nature
– Heart describes this part’s internal core attitudes
What are you made of?
• Inner and Outer Man
– Flesh and Spirit
• Inner Man:
(Soul/Spirit)
– Heart/Will: Character
and Choice
– Mind: Thoughts and
Feelings
• Outer Man
– Body: Flesh
– Social: God and
others
Greatest Commands
“Love the Lord your God
with all your heart and
with all your soul and
with all your mind and
with all your strength.’
The second is this: ‘Love
your neighbor as
yourself.’ There is no
commandment greater
than these.”
–Mark 12:30-31
What are you made of?
• We live out lives
from the inside out
(good tree bears
good fruit)
• It is the Lord’s goal
to transform every
dimension of our
lives to be in step
with his Spirit
What are you made of?
• Your heart may need
heart renovation if:
– You dwell on ungodly
thoughts (worry,
bitterness)
– You allow your feelings to
control you
– You misuse your body in
order to cope with life’s
problems
– Your heart is not engaged
in relationships
– Other examples?
God knows our heart
“Search me, O God, and
know my heart; test
me and know my
anxious thoughts. See
if there is any offensive
way in me, and lead
me in the way
everlasting.”
(Psalm 139:23-24)
