Renovation of the Heart • Who brings about this transformation of our hearts? • Do we still believe that God is still working to renovate your heart? – “…he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Phil 1:6) – “You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you.” (Rom 8:9) Struggle and the Spirit • • • • Romans 7:14-23 Romans 8:9-17,26 Galatians 5:16-25 Spiritual Formation- the process of God’s Spirit shaping our spirit to be what he intends us to be – Walk in step with the Spirit – Be like Jesus Understanding Yourself • Understanding allows for proper care of yourself, both of the body and the soul • “Heart,” “Soul,” “Spirit,” and “Will” are words describing the same part of the human – Will is this part’s power to decide and choose – Spirit and Soul describe this part’s nonmaterial nature – Heart describes this part’s internal core attitudes What are you made of? • Inner and Outer Man – Flesh and Spirit • Inner Man: (Soul/Spirit) – Heart/Will: Character and Choice – Mind: Thoughts and Feelings • Outer Man – Body: Flesh – Social: God and others Greatest Commands “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” –Mark 12:30-31 What are you made of? • We live out lives from the inside out (good tree bears good fruit) • It is the Lord’s goal to transform every dimension of our lives to be in step with his Spirit What are you made of? • Your heart may need heart renovation if: – You dwell on ungodly thoughts (worry, bitterness) – You allow your feelings to control you – You misuse your body in order to cope with life’s problems – Your heart is not engaged in relationships – Other examples? God knows our heart “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24)
