Digestion is the process
by which molecules
are broken down and
used by the body.
Digestive Tract is about 7
meters long, that’s
about 24 feet!
Mouth:
Chemical and mechanical
digestion
The Digestive tract
begins at the mouth
Salivary Duct
Teeth, jawbone, and
tongue
Pharynx:
Also known as the
throat
Connects mouth to
the esophagus
and trachea
Esophagus:
Connection from
throat to the
stomach
Closed at the top
except during
swallowing
Muscle contractions
Stomach:
J-shaped ‘bag’
Secretes about 5 pints of
gastric juice each day
Connection to the small
intestine
Mechanical and chemical
digestion
Small Intestine:
About 5 meters long, that’s 17
feet of digestive tract!
Connects to the large intestine
Consists of the duodenum,
jejunum, and ileum
Chemical digestion
Absorption of nutrients
Large Intestine:
About 1.5 meters long, that’s
5 feet!
Connected to the small
intestine
Consists of the colon and
rectum
Undigested food is formed
into feces
Support in Homeostasis:
Digestion breaks down food
into smaller molecules
that the body can use for
nutrients.
