Fit4Life Sensor
Technology to
Promote Healthy
Living
“The intention of the
researchers in this study in
2011 [Purpura et al., 2011,
p. 427] was to highlight the
social and ethical issues
involved in adopting using
pervasive and
interventionist wearable technology: in their words, ‘to demonstrate how easily such a
design can spiral out of control’. Yet a mere 3 years since this paper was published, such
Health Promotion technologies are now a reality.” [Lupton,
2014]
Zombies, Run! Video Game to Motivate
Runners
Zombies, Run! is an ultra-immersive running game and
audio adventure, designed for runners. They deliver the
story straight to the runner’s headphones through orders
and voice recordings - and when the runner gets back
home, they use the supplies they’ve collected while
running to build and grow their base.
SecondLife Platform Used for Clinical Training and Informing
the Patients
Second Life offers unique
design features for
disseminating health
information, training
health professionals, and
enabling patient
education for both
academic and commercial
health behaviour
research. [Beard et al,
2009] It can also be used
to inform the patients
about a healthcare
facility and what they
should be expecting
during their visits.

Sickweather - Sickness Forecasting & Mapping
Everyday thousands of people around the globe update social media sites like Facebook and
Twitter when they (or someone close to them) get sick. Sickweather scans social networks
for indicators of illness, allowing users to check for the chance of sickness.

Database of Clinical Research Network (CRN)
A database of all the portfolio research studies registered with UKCRN
categorised by areas of medicine. Users can do keyword searches and find
specific studies and read about them. The database will tell them at what stage
the study is and what the inclusion/exclusion criteria are. Users can use the
same interface to enquire about or join particular studies.
Patient Did-Not-Attends (DNAs)
Some Factors contributing to DNAs according to NHS Institute for Innovation and
Improvement:
The two most commonly cited reasons are patients forgetting and clerical errors or
communication failures which mean that the patient was unaware of the appointment.
Some of the other causal factors are:
Socio-demographic factors which include:



Age and gender
Distance from hospital, GP/ PCT
Deprivation
Patient factors:



No longer need to attend
Too unwell to attend
Employment







Previous experience
Seriousness of illness
Nature of illness
Childcare
Cost of travel prohibitive
Travel difficult to organise
Public transport difficult to access







Hospital factors:


Difficulty in cancelling
appointments
Incorrect recording


Poor appointment card design
Lack of notification
Short notification
Organisation of clinics
Booking (partial booking)
Time or day of appointment may
be inconvenient
Appointment types - new or
follow-up
Urgency of appointment
Transport / parking
Other factors:

GP/patient communication
Some recommendations to reduce DNAs:
-
Make sure the appointment is necessary
Reduce patient anxiety by ensuring that they know what is going to happen and
when
Appointment cards/letters should be easy to read and understand
Cancelling the appointments should be easy
Reminding the patient
Microsoft Hospital In-Patient App
Mary uses the in-patient app to view information about her care team specialists. She is
able to learn about her injury and her procedure using the in-patient app and the available
images and research tools. The surgeon uses the in-patient app to review a variety of x-rays
and MRIs with Mary, which help explain the scope of the injury. He also uses the annotation
functions in the in-patient app to add comments to any of the patient images. Mary is able
to request additional pain medications from her bed side, when necessary, using the inpatient app. She elects to submit feedback about her hospital stay using the in-patient app.
Microsoft Manipal Hospital App
This doctor's rounds app is used to plan their patient visits during medical rounds. It uses
the hospital's patient information system to schedule visits. The medical rounds serve as an
opportunity to evaluate patient status and administer treatment. The app provides a
summarized view of the doctor’s daily rounds schedule. He can also search for patients by
location. The patient record includes information on the patients vital statistics and other
data acquired from the hospital patient information management system. Doctor’s visit can
be interrupted by an alarm notification which provides immediate patient information and a
link to the patient record.
PATIENT ALERT ALARM - bed, wheelchair, seat & room
monitor - Out of chair or bed fall alarm
Pressure Sensitive Chair or Bed Patient Alarm
Health Visiting App
The Birmingham Community Healthcare BCHC NHS Trust Health Visiting service provides
information and support for all new parents. This app provides health visiting clients with
easy access to important advice and key events in addition to location based information for
local chemists and nearby A & E services. The app also allows the user to save important
dates to a custom diary and save details about their Health Visitor contact.
PatientPrompt
From appointment reminders to population health notifications to post-procedure followup instructions, PatientPrompt delivers the right message to the right patient using email,
voice and text.
Swallow Prompt App
The app has been designed to help people who have
difficulty in managing their saliva, such as those with
neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease and
Multiple Sclerosis who have reduced sensation. The app
can be set to either vibrate or beep (a wired or
bluetooth headset is recommended) at a set interval.
This prompts people to swallow prior to saliva spilling
from their lips.
Medi-Prompt - Medication Reminder
and Log
Medi-Prompt is an app for managing
medication schedules and reminding the
patients to take their medicine.
R4 dental practice management
