Linda McCartney: The Time Factor

Admirers of the McCartneys the world over were saddened to learn of Linda’s death in April
1998. Nalinikanta Dasa examines the chart of a remarkable soul.

In the great Indian epic, the Mahabharata, king Yudhisthira was tested by his father Yama, the god of justice.
Asked what the most wonderful thing in the world was, the king replied, “Every day, we clearly see that millions of
living entities are entering into the temple of Death, and yet we think it will not happen to us.” Those who study
and interpret the time factor in Vedic astrology should know differently. Here is an example horoscope.
A Heavenly Personality
In Linda McCartney’s chart there are signs of a heavenly personality. The great Raja Yoga in the first house,
the foundation of a horoscope, includes three natural benefics. The Ascendant lord in its own sign, combined with
the 9th and l0th lords, is rarely seen. Linda was an attractive woman (Venus), a caring mother (Moon), a devoted
vegetarian (Venus and Mercury), wife of a rich and famous man (powerful planets in the 7th sign Libra, combined
with a benefic Venus), a skillful, well-spoken and friendly woman (Mercury).
Yet even such wonderful karma must come to an end, as Linda was embodied in a temporary, material
tabernacle. The major contributing factors to medium longevity (age 56) in this case were the positions of the Sun
(karaka or indicator of the body and health) in the l2th house of loss and hospitalization; the aspects of the two
worst malefics for charts with a Libra Ascendant, namely Mars and Jupiter, to this Sun; Jupiter (a temporal malefic
for Libra rising) in the 8th house of longevity; malefic Mars aspecting the lagna (Ascendant) and lagnesh (lord of
the Ascendant); and the operation of a malefic dasa preceeding her death.
Rahu (infection or poisons) and Saturn (death, chronic or incurable disease) are the two main karakas of
cancer. Yet Mars (overheating of the blood) can also play a role in the disease, especially in this case since it is a
maraka (a potentially death-giving planet) for a Libra Ascendant and is tenanting the 6th house of disease. Rahu
here is in its enemy’s sign, the sign of the malefic Sun which tenants the l2th house, and at 29° Leo is itself very
close to the Sun and l2th house. Saturn influences the 8th house of death and the natural benefic Jupiter (cancer
spread to her liver, which is governed by Jupiter). This affliction of Jupiter, which is in the 8th house, is a temporal
malefic for Libra ascendant, and is with the natural malefic Saturn in an inimical sign, and is 8th from the Moon, is
notable here. Jupiter’s weakness generally indicates that the person doesn’t have a sufficient amount of pious
activities from the previous lives to eradicate problems in the horoscope. Furthermore, malefic Mars aspects the
Moon, which is the karaka of the breasts and lungs, where the disease started. The lord of the 4th house of the chest
area, is also in the 8th house of death, conjunct the inauspicious ruler of the 6th house of disease (which, for further
emphasis, has the ominous Mars in its sign).
The Ketu mahadasa operated from l988 to l995 in Linda’s case, and as Ketu is influenced by malefic Rahu and
Saturn, and as it aspects the Ascendant, lord of the Ascendant and the Moon, those years must have started the
problem. She died in the Venus-Sun period. Venus is lord of the 8th and is ruler of the sign that the malefic SaturnJupiter combination is in; and the Sun is in the l2th house, l2th from Venus.
Paul McCartney’s Chart
From her husband’s chart we can also see the yogas for death of the wife. Paul has Venus, karaka of wife, in
the 8th house of death, aspected by Rahu from the l2th house and having malefic Saturn in its sign. He has the ruler
of the 7th house Jupiter too close to the Sun, which is lord of the 12th and lord of the sign Rahu is in. He was in the
Mars-Venus period when she passed away, Mars being a maraka when Virgo rises, and Venus being afflicted in the
8th house.
The Raja Yogas in Paul McCartney’s own chart, with the Ascendant and 5th lords in the 9th house, the SunJupiter combination in the l0th, and the waxing Moon in its own sign in the 11th, could not delay his time for
suffering either.
Transcendentalists consider our life within the material body to be a temporary situation of inevitable change,
that is merely a facility for purification of the consciousness. Its only purpose is returning to our sat-cit-ananda
(being-consciousness-bliss) existence in our original home, the Vaikuntha sky (the eternal world of no anxiety). If,
as the Vedas say, that is the true goal of our imprisonment here, then having a rich or comfortable, heavenly
existence here on earth may be undesirable in the sense that it generates more attachment to the pleasures of the
senses, and more grief when the time comes (and our time is gonna come) for us to leave for the next phase.
