Lee, Antietam, Fredericksburg State Standards: Strand 1 Concept 6 PO 2 1862 • March 1862: the first battle between “ironclads” takes place as the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia battle to a tie off the coast of Virginia. This begins a new form of naval warfare. • 1862: In the Western theatre the Union will win a victory against the Confederates at the battle of Shiloh and they will take the city of New Orleans. • In the East, General Lee will be appointed commander of the main Confederate Army. Although outnumbered, the Army of Northern Virginia (CSA) drove the Army of the Potomac (USA) away from the Confederate capitol of Richmond. • Sept. 17th 1862: Gen. Lee invades the North resulting in the Battle of Antietam. It will be the bloodiest day of the war with 22,720 casualties. • December 13th 1863: a Union army suffers a disastrous defeat at the Battle of Fredericksburg, VA.
