The Odyssey Extra Credit Opportunity Remember, extra credit is “extra” and not meant to replace assigned work. You may only complete one option for extra credit. Make your assignment is aesthetically attractive with color, neatness, and organization. You may complete the assignment on poster board of some sort, PowerPoint, or Prezi. Option 1: It’s Greek to Me! Search the Internet to find all 3 items: 1. Five words used in the English language that are derived from a Greek stem. For each stem, write the stem, it’s definition, a word made from that stem, and the word’s definition. http://www.enhancemyvocabulary.com/word-roots_greek.html 2. Five names of US cities adopted from the Greek (along with explanations of the Greek word from which they were adopted). 3. The meanings of the names, Odysseus and Penelope. Write the name, it’s meaning, and how it is appropriate to the character. Option 2: Mythological Allusion The influences of mythology are all around us… in books, movies, songs, and even in the marketplace (businesses). Your assignment is to find three examples of different mythological allusions in the world around you. You may ask others, look around you, search the Internet, etc. On a sheet of paper, put a picture of the allusion, along with a written explanation of the allusion, including the god or goddess to which the allusion is made, a brief description of who the god or goddess is, and why you think the allusion was made. (How does it benefit the business?) Here is an example for you: NIKE NIKE is the Greek Goddess of Victory. She is often portrayed with wings and a flowing robe. Nike represents strength, speed, and triumph. The sportswear company probably chose Nike as its name to associate these positive characteristics with its athletic shoes and apparel. People will want to buy Nike products because they think the sportswear will help them to have strength and be triumphant. Incidentally, the woman who designed the famous “swoosh” was a college student who only charged $35 for her design. (Or is that a myth?) Option 3: Odyssey Art This option is for those of you who are artistically inclined. From the text of the Odyssey, depict in a drawing or painting one of the characters or settings we have read about: Odysseus, Cyclops, Cyclops cavern, Sirens, or Scylla & Charybdis. This should be done on paper larger than 8.5 x 11 inches, should be neatly and well executed, and should have a brief written explanation (with textual evidence) that explains how you came to your artistic interpretation. If you have any questions, please come see me rather than complete one of these assignments incorrectly. Extra Credit assignments are due on Friday, May 15th. (Sorry, no exceptions!) This assignment would count as one test grade.
