During the past few years, the genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 were identified. Mutations in each is
responsible of the syndrome of familial breast and ovarian carcinoma.
Among women that carry a mutation like this there is a risk of 56%-80% of developing breast
cancer during life-time and 16%-60% risk of developing ovarian cancer.
Lately, it has been proven that prophylactic mastectomy and/or oophorectomy might reduce the
above risks of developing cancer.
Neither of these treatments offers a full protection and furthermore, the compliance of the carriers
is partial too, considering the physical and mental consequences.
This study is screening the compliance of a random populatiopn of 30 healthy carriers of BRCA
mutations to prophylactic oophorectomy. The women are being followed-up in HADASSAH EINKAREM hospital JERUSALEM. When a prophylactic surgery was done, we examined the pathologic
results.
Results:
Out of the 30 women included in this research, 17 chose to go through a prophylactic
oophorectomy. Most of the rest have been found relatively young so the procedure was not
recommended at this stage of life. Pathologic examining of the ovaries found one tumor and one
inclusion cyst, which might be a pre-malignic pathology.
Conclusions:
Based on the above results, we see that this kind of treatment, even though quite radical, might be
a good protection for the carriers against threatening silently-developing cancer. Moreover, most of
the carriers accepted their doctor advice to go through this kind of procedure.
