ABSTRACT Drug Utilization Study of Prophylactic Antibiotics on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Surgery (A Study on the Department of Urology at Dr. Soetomo Teaching Hospital Surabaya) A Drug Utilization Study (DUS) of prophylactic antibiotics on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia surgery has been conducted at Dr. Soetomo teaching hospital, Surabaya. The method of this study was non experimental, descriptive, and retrospective. The objectives of this study were; (1) to observe the profile of prophylactic antibiotics used on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) surgery; (2) to find the appropriateness of prophylactic antibiotics used on patients with already non sterile urine before the surgery; and (3) to observe the infection after BPH surgeries using prophylactic antibiotics. Prophylactic antibiotics used in this study were: cefotaxime (used in 90,3%), ciprofloxacin (used in 6,4%), and ceftazidime (used in 3,2 %). Over 17 patients with non sterile urine, there were 4 cases of inappropriate use of cefotaxime on patients with urine containing Pseudomonas. However, there were no signs of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) following BPH surgeries, even though in most of the patients, significant elevation on leukocytes count were occurred.
