HIPPA/OSHA What you need to know for NCH • What does HIPPA stand for? • When was HIPPA created? • Involves privacy to all patients, and security for electronic billing. – Increases patient rights – Provider responsibilities • Re: health care info • Benefits: – Reduces inappropriate use of and the disclosure of information. – Patients learn of their rights. – Includes Disclosure Rights (who get the info) • Must have a signed authorization SN – How Does This Affect You? • Be careful of who you give info to. – Never assume it is the parent or legal guardian in the child’s room or on the phone. – Ask who you are speaking to and identify carefully visitors in patient rooms. – Don’t look up info on computers Your Role in HIPPA • Use info carefully. • Verify the identity of any person seeking info. • Report any violations to instructor or compliance officer. • Be sure to shred old worksheets • No printing of any patient information. HIPPA Violations •Doctor - suspended for two weeks and completed further HIPPA training. •Unit secretary - fired.
