2001: A Space
Odyssey
Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clark
Notes to help you follow the movie:
 The film begins with 3 minutes of darkness with sound perhaps
simulating the beginning of time.
 “The Dawn of Man” is the first monolith placed on earth by
extraterrestrials explorers four million years ago to observe man’s
behavior.
 “On the Moon” is the second monolith. It is programmed to emit a
signal when discovered by an earth-man advising the extraterrestrials
that man has progressed to that point in space. The secret mission
referred to in the film is the discovery of the monolith’s signal and an
attempt to determine what it is and what it means.
 “Jupiter and Beyond” is the third monolith placed in orbit around
Jupiter. It either is or opens the stargate for Dave to be transported
through time and space and into another galaxy where he is studied
like an animal in a zoo.
 Dave progresses from middle age to death and is then reborn as a star
child. At the end of the movie he is returning to earth to prepare the
next step in man’s destiny.
