Iliopsoas:
 Psoas major – O –transverse processes of T-12-L1-5 as well as bodies of
lumbar vert I – lesser trochanter of femur A flex the hip, lateraly rotate the
hip, adduct the hip
 Psoas minor - O-Body and transverse process of first lumbar vert I –
superior ramus of pubis A-Assist to create lordotic curvature in the lumbar
spine. Tilt pelvis posteriorly
 Iliacus – O- Iliac fossa I-Lesser trochanter A-flex the hip, laterally rotate the
hip, adduct the hip
Deep External Hip Rotators
 Piriformis – O-Anterior surface of sacrum I greater trochanter
 Quadratus femoris – O-lateral border of ischial tuberosity I intertrochanteris
crest, between greater and lesser trochanters
 Obturator internus O-obturator membrane and inferior surface of obturator
foramen I – medial surface of greater trochanter
 Obturator externus – o – surperior and inferior rami of pubis I-trochanteric
fossa of femur
 Gemellus superior – O-Ischial spine I-Upper border of greater trochanter
 Gemellus Inferior – O- Ischial tuberosity I Upper border of greater
trochanter
 All perform action of laterally rotating the hip
Abductors
 Gluteus maximus – O-coccyx, edge of sacrum, posterior iliac crest,
sacrobuberous and si ligaments. I-gluteal tuberosity (upper fibers) iliotibial
tract (lower fibers) – A. extends the hip, laterally rotates the hip, abducts the
hip. Lower fibers adduct the hip
 Gluteus medius – O- gluteal surface of the ilium between the iliac crest and
posterior and anterior gluteal lines – I Greater trochanter, A Abduct the hip,
anterior fibers flex and medially rotate the hip, posterior fibers extend and
laterally rotate the hip
 G. minimus – O- gluteal surface of the ilium between the iliac crest and
posterior and anterior gluteal lines I – anterior border of greater trochanter,
A-Abduct the hip, medially rotate the hip, flex the hip
 Tensor fasciae latae- O-iliac crest, posterior to the ASIS, I-Iliotibial tract, Aflex the hip, medially roate the hip, abduct the hip
 Sartoriius – O-anterior superior iliac spine, I-proximal, medial shaft of the
tibia at pes anserinus tendon, A-flex the hip, laterially rotate the hip, abduct
the hip, flex the knee, medially rotate the flexed knee
 Piriformis (when hip is flexed) -O-Anterior surface of sacrum I greater
trochanter
Internal Hip rotators
 Semitendinosus - O-ischial tuberosity I proximal, medial shaft of the tibia at
pes anserinus tendon A flex the knee, medially rotate the flexed knee, extend
the hip, medially rotate the hip, tilt the pelvis
 Semimembranosus - O-ischial tuberosity I – posterior aspect of medial
condyle of tibia A flex the knee, medially rotate the flexed knee, extend the
hip, medially rotate the hip, tilt the pelvis
 Glute med (anterior fibers) – see above under abductors
 Glute minimus – see above under abductors
 Adductor magnus – O-inferior ramus of the pubis, ramus of ischium and
ischial tuberosity, I-medial lip of linea aspera and adductor tubercle
 A. longus – O-Pubic tubercle I medial lip of linea aspera
 A. brevis – O-Inferior ramus of pubis I-Pectineal line and medial lip of linea
aspera
 Gracilis – O-Inferior ramus of pubis and ramus of ischium I-Proximal, medial
shaft of tibia at pes anserinus tendon
 Pectineus – O-Superior ramus of pubis, I Pectineal line of femur
 Tensor fasciae latae – see under abductors above
Adductors
 Adductor magnus – see above under internal hip rotators
 A. longus - see above under internal hip rotators
 A. brevis - see above under internal hip rotators
 Pectineus - see above under internal hip rotators
 Gracilis 0- see above under internal hip rotators
 Iliacus – see above under Iliopsoas

Hamstrings
 Biceps femoris – long head-I-ischial tuberosity, short head – lateral lip of
linea aspera, I- head of the fibula, A- flex the knee, laterally rotate the flexed
knee, extend the hip, laterally roate the hip, tilt the pelvis posteriorly
 Semitendinosus – O-ischial tuberosity I proximal, medial shaft of the tibia at
pes anserinus tendon A flex the knee, medially rotate the flexed knee, extend
the hip, medially rotate the hip, tilt the pelvis
 Semimembranosus – O-ischial tuberosity I – posterior aspect of medial
condyle of tibia A flex the knee, medially rotate the flexed knee, extend the
hip, medially rotate the hip, tilt the pelvis
