Affordable “nonlinear” solutions,
also on your HF instruments
Device characterisation made easy, fast and accurate
Bornem, June 2009 - With NMDG's extension kits for different types of high-frequency (HF)
receivers the user can characterise the nonlinear behaviour of HF components in time and
frequency domains under realistic conditions, even in a non-50 Ohm environment.
NMDG is now releasing the 2009A version of its component characterisation software, ICE,
running on top of selected Rohde&Schwarz (R&S) and Agilent™ network analysers. The NMDG
VNAPlus, add-on kits to the Agilent™ PNA series (PNAPlus) and R&S ZVA/ZVT series (ZVxPlus)
network analysers, uses ICE to connect to different stimuli, going from DC to RF. Additionally,
NMDG can provide drivers to connect HF oscilloscopes and sampler-based receivers.
The Integrated Component Characterization Environment (ICE) is the flagship of NMDG. It is an
evolutionary platform, gradually providing the latest expertise in component characterisation,
testing and modelling to the customer.
In contrast to instrumentation software, this software is device - centric. ICE has been developed
to combine flexibility, versatility and speed. Indeed, the software brings together different stimuli
and different receivers in a coherent way to provide almost in real-time the voltage and current
waveforms at the different ports of a device under test. At the same time, derived quantities such
as input and output impedances, gain and power added efficiency (PAE) can be visualised.
ICE is taking benefit of the different calibration methods implemented in the network analysers. It
allows to combine them automatically with the additional calibration steps for absolute calibration,
resulting in accurate measurements at the different ports of the device under test. This is possible
for both connectorised and on-wafer devices. For in-fixture devices and the elimination of onwafer parasitics, generalised de-embedding techniques are also available. These take leakage to
ground into account which is important for on-wafer characterisation. To take the losses of bias
tees and cables properly into account, DC calibration methods are implemented in ICE.
Step by step, and on customer demand, other instrument and receiver types (oscilloscope,
vectorial signal generator/analyser, ...) will be implemented and different applications will become
available in ICE that resonate with customer requirements, going from characterisation, to
modelling and design.
