Medical Imaging’s
Agent for Change
REPORT
In 2011, the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA®) took on
new initiatives to advance medical imaging for patients around the
world. Here’s a glimpse of how RSNA strives to be an agent for positive
change—and to serve you by delivering the resources you need to excel
in radiologic science, education and practice, to connect with your
colleagues, and, above all, to provide the best care for your patients.
YOUR COMMUNIT Y
As a member of the RSNA community, you are part of an ever-growing
alliance of visionaries, leaders, researchers, clinicians, educators and
mentors from all across the globe.
In 2011 RSNA membership reached an all-time
high of 48,567 members in 137 countries. RSNA
welcomed members in developing nations with
discounted dues and expanded the scope of its
international programs and fellowships.
To respond to the needs of this growing
community, RSNA gathered input from users
to develop a new, comprehensively redesigned
RSNA.org that delivers the information you
use most. RSNA’s vast volume of scientific,
educational and historical content is now
organized dynamically for RSNA members,
trainees, international professionals, product
exhibitors, patients and the media.
With the help of the RSNA Residents and
Fellows Committee, the Society expanded its
resources for trainees, including Fellowship
Connect, an online resource where trainees
can search for fellowship positions by specialty,
location, and institution.
RSNA also launched a new collection of
apps and new functionalities for its mobile
site, m.RSNA.org. Apps provide quick access
to Radiology and RadioGraphics as well as
RadiologyInfo.org and the RSNA Meeting
Program.
“Our community is becoming increasingly
global,” said 2011 RSNA president Burton P.
Drayer, M.D. “In addition to enhancing the
effectiveness of RSNA’s preeminent annual
meeting, educational programs, research
support, scientific journals and information
technology activities, we are working to expand
our collaborations with other imaging and
medical societies both in North America and
internationally.”

YOUR SCIENCE
Each month you can look to RSNA’s science journal, Radiology, to deliver the finest in research
and best clinical practice from all over the world.
With 44,706 citations in 2011, Radiology was
the most cited journal in the field, according
to ISI Web of Knowledge Journal Citation
Reports®, and had the second highest impact
factor—6.066. Manuscript submissions to
Radiology hit a record high of 2,600.
Radiology continued to expand its online
dimensions for enhanced learning and
discussion, including monthly “Hear What We
Think” podcasts, articles published 6 weeks
ahead of print and exclusive online-only
material, also accessible through the Radiology
mobile app. The journal also began offering
2011 Annual Report

CME opportunities for review articles beginning
in January 2011 and announced the upcoming
launch of Radiology Select, a series of essential
articles organized into topical collections for
every medical imaging professional.
At RSNA 2011, investigators presented more
than 3,000 scientific presentations in 16
subspecialties. From the printed Meeting
Program in Brief and Case of the Day displays,
attendees were able to scan quick reference
(QR) codes to immediately access online
abstracts on their mobile devices.
RSNA’s biomarkers working groups, including
the Quantitative Imaging and Biomarkers
Alliance (QIBA), expanded a library of bestpractices protocols to help measure treatment
response in cancer, asthma and COPD. At
the Quantitative Imaging Reading Room
exhibit and kiosk at RSNA 2011, developers
showcased commercially available products
and applications that you can use to integrate
quantitative analysis into your interpretation
and reporting process.
RSNA continued to offer programs for
researchers pursuing federal funding, such
as Writing a Competitive Grant Proposal,
Advanced Course in Grant Writing and the
NIH Grantsmanship Workshop. Programs
including the RSNA Clinical Trials Methodology
Workshop and Introduction to Academic
Radiology helped members develop essential
skills for designing protocols and pursuing
careers in research and academia.
YOUR EDUCATION
RSNA’s educational resources are here to help radiologists and
allied professionals maintain certification, learn the latest
imaging techniques and keep their clinical skills sharp.
During its recent reaccreditation process,
RSNA was commended by the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education
(ACCME) “for demonstrating that yours is a
learning organization and a change agent for
the physicians you serve.”
Medical imaging professionals can now add
leadership to their credentials thanks to
the Academy of Radiology Leadership and
Management (ARLM). Sponsored by RSNA, the
Association of University Radiologists (AUR),
the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology
Departments (SCARD), the American Roentgen
Ray Society (ARRS), and the Association

of Administrators in Academic Radiology
Departments (AAARAD), ARLM has developed
a certificate program recognizing completion
of courses that promote leadership skills in
radiology. A list of qualifying courses—featured
at the RSNA, ARRS, AUR and SCARD annual
meetings—is available at RadLeaders.org.
RSNA collaborated with the American
Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM)
to expand its library of popular online Physics
Modules, designed to educate radiologists and
radiology residents about important concepts
in physics as identified in the AAPM Physics
Curriculum.
In addition to the thousands of continuing
medical education (CME) credits available at
RSNA 2011—up to 92.75 for each physician—
RSNA awarded 99,451 CME certificates in 2011
through its online education activities, including
articles in its peer-reviewed education journal,
RadioGraphics. RSNA 2011 featured 233
refresher courses, 127 multisession courses
and 2,124 education exhibits.
More than 135 institutions are registered to
use the online RSNA/APDR Resident Learning
Portfolio, helping residents and program
coordinators document growth and progress
as physicians.
Olmsted
RadioGraphics celebrated the legacy of
editor William W. Olmsted, M.D., who retired
at the end of 2011 after serving at the helm
of the RSNA education journal since 1990.
“Bill intuitively understood that a journal that
serves a changing field such as radiology must
keep pace with changes in the specialty and
continually evolve,” said 2011 RSNA president
Burton P. Drayer, M.D. “Under his editorship,
RadioGraphics has become the premier
journal for continuing medical education in
radiology. RSNA—and indeed, the field of
radiology—owes William Olmsted a deep debt
of gratitude.”
Dr. Olmsted is succeeded by Jeffrey S. Klein,
M.D. Dr. Klein is the A. Bradley Soule and
John P. Tampas Green and Gold Professor of
Radiology, Department of Radiology, University
of Vermont College of Medicine and Fletcher
Allen Health Care. An RSNA member since
1986, Dr. Klein has served the Society in a
number of capacities, including as presenter
of numerous scientific sessions and refresher
courses at the RSNA annual meeting. He was
a member of the Refresher Course Committee
from 2003 to 2005 and the Education Exhibits
Awards Committee from 2005 to 2007.

YOUR PR AC TICE
RSNA is continually developing and improving free tools
and technologies that can help make your day-to-day
work easier and more efficient.
Nearly every radiologist has a collection
of interesting cases on hand—and RSNA’s
Teaching File System makes it easy to migrate
them instantly into teaching files. In 2011, users
discovered upgrades to the system, including
a simple one-click installer as well as the Zip
Service, which lets you anonymize and upload
files all at once. The Teaching File System is
powered by RSNA’s Medical Imaging Resource
Center (MIRC), the same system that hosts the
Clinical Trials Processor tool, which lets clinical
trials administrators safely migrate huge
quantities of data across institutions.
RSNA’s Structured Reporting Committee
continued to expand its library of best-practice
structured reporting templates, ready for use by

equipment and software developers to produce
integration profiles that enable information to
flow easily into an electronic health record.
Standardized templates will make it easier to
retrieve information from radiology reports,
helping to reduce costs, minimize redundant
examinations and pull data for clinical trials.
myRSNA®, the free web-based tool for RSNA
members, underwent further refinement in
2011. With Point of Care (PoC) CME, members
can search peer-reviewed articles for answers
at their workstation and claim CME on the spot.
You can also store, share and play all your files
on myRSNA, with no need to install software.
Through its work within the Integrating the
Healthcare Enterprise® initiative, RSNA
promoted more seamless adoption of a
universal electronic health record by delivering
devices and software that are compliant with
cross-enterprise data sharing standards. The
IHE Image Sharing Demonstration at RSNA
2011 allowed attendees to see from a patient’s
perspective how images and radiology reports
can be instantly transmitted across health care
systems—and how patients can take control of
the process.
YOUR PROFESSION
RSNA continues to foster relationships among medical specialties and subspecialties, honor
outstanding contributors to medical imaging and keep you in the know about issues affecting
the work you do each day.
In addition to news about the latest discoveries
and the services available to the community,
RSNA News delivered timely articles each
month on topics such as the conundrum of
self-referral, the first FDA-approved mobile
radiology app, the National Lung Cancer
Screening Trial of the National Cancer Institute
and ways for radiologists to combat career
burnout. RSNA News also unveiled a sleek new
Tablet Edition for iPad and Android devices.
During the annual meeting, the Daily Bulletin
featured meeting highlights in both print and
mobile versions.
RSNA continued to keep members in the know
with electronic communications, including
a monthly E-Reminder and RSNA Weekly in
addition to audience-specific communications
such as R|F Buzz for residents and fellows and
QIBA Quarterly.
