Word Definition Acute Acute angles measure between 0º and 90º. Angle Angles are the regions of a plane between two rays which share a common origin Equilateral triangle An equilateral triangle has three equal sides and angles Isosceles triangle Two equal sides. Line of symmetry Symmetry is when one shape becomes exactly like another if you flip, slide or turn it. The simplest type of Symmetry is "Reflection" (or "Mirror") Symmetry, as shown in this picture of my dog Flame Obtuse angle An obtuse angle is one which is more than 90° but less than 180° In other words, it is between a right angle and a straight angle. Picture Parallel lines Two parallel lines do not intersect at any point. Parallelogram A parallelogram is a quadrilateral that has parallel sides in pairs. The sum of the interior angles of a parallelogram is equal to 360° Two lines are perpendicular when they intersect at 90° angles or right angles. Perpendicular lines Plane figure A flat figure Polygon A plane shape (twodimensional) with straight sides. Examples: triangles, rectangles and pentagons. (Note: a circle is not a polygon because it has a curved side) Quadrilateral A quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides. A quadrilateral has two diagonals. The sum of the interior angles of a quadrilateral equals 360º Rectangle A rectangle has equal opposite sides and 4 right angles. Rhombus A rhombus has four equal sides and equal opposite angles. Right angle A right triangle has a right angle. Scalene triangle Three unequal sides. Side • the lateral face of a threedimensional solid. Square A square has 4 equal sides and 4 right angles. Triangle A triangle is a polygon determined by three nonaligned points (vertices) or three intersecting line segments (sides). Trapezoid The trapezoid or trapezium is a quadrilateral with two parallel sides. Vertex The vertex is the point of union between two rays which form an angle Line A line has one dimension, length, and it is determined by two points Intersecting lines Two lines that meet at a point are called intersecting lines. Similar two shapes are Similar when the only difference is size (and possibly the need to move, turn or flip one around). Congruent angles have the same measure. Congruent Ray A line with a start point but no end point (it goes to infinity) Line segment A line segment is a straight line that joins two points, called endpoints. Straight angle A straight angle measures exactly 180º Equilateral triangle Three equal sides
